Does the xbox 360 play bluray or HD DVDs, and is the picture better with HDMI vs. reg Bluray dvd player?
I have an older dvd player (progressive scan sony) and an XBox 360. My xbox 360 is connected via hdmi. What's the best way to play bluray or hd dvds? Can I play one or the other on the xbox or do I need to buy a dvd player? The tv is "hd ready" and has cable, analog, hdmi, and some sort of digital input I think. Thanks in advance.

The xbox 360 does not play blueray. Back before HD DVD was cancelled, you could buy a HD DVD player to attach to the 360. HD DVD and Blueray were in competition and Blueray won. The formats were not compatible either. Blueray was backed by better companies such as sony. Forget HD DVD, it's done. You will need to buy a Blueray dvd player. I recommend panasonic. The HDMI cable from the 360 will render the best graphics but having it does not imply high definition dvd. The fact that the tv is HD ready implies that it does not have a built in HD receiver. Make sure that the Blueray player you buy will work with your HD ready tv. Good Luck!

The PS3 (in my opinion) is too focused on being multimedia, where the Xbox 360 is more focused towards gaming. If you care more about online gaming, get the Xbox 360; if you want Blu-ray, then the PS3.

you can't play blu-rays, and good luck finding HD-DVD's. You'll need to buy a blu-ray player.
