My car squeaks when I turn it on, now the battery light turned on?

I've had a squeaky car for a while, I admit I neglected to repair it because I tried to order the power steering pump off of Ebay and it takes like 3 weeks to ship.

Anyways..

My car used to squeak when I turned it on, and when I turn the wheel. I had to rev the engine to 3-5k rpm to quiet it (and it would get louder at the higher rpms before it stopped).. Now the squeaking stays at a steady speed no matter if I rev or not (something changed) and now the battery light turned on.

Is this the power steering pump? that's what my mechanic told me he thinks it is. I'm starting to think it's the belt that's loose and now probably needs to be replaced.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

Also, I'm worried if I screwed up my alternator belt.. if I screwed up the belt to the alternator, do you think I can make a 15 minute drive to the mechanic?

Thanks again!

Sounds like you have either a bad alternator or your belt is bad. Since your alternator light is now come on it makes me think your alternator has shot craps on you. If someone could remove your alternator you could take it to a local auto parts store and they will check it out for you and most of the time they won't charge you to check it out. The bearings in the alternator may be worn out. You may also have a bad power steering pump to. From what you say about turning your wheel and the noise it makes when you do that sounds like the pump might be bad. Before You purchase a power steering pump you need to get the alternator thing taken care of and also put a new belt on on to and see what you have. You might also have the pulleys for the belt checked out to. If you still have noise after all of this, then you would probably need to do the power steering thing. It may be one of those weird things where you have a couple or three different things going on at the same time.

It's cold there isn't it? Check the power steering fluid; if it's good, I would be looking at the alternator(which most likely has a bad bearing). If that's all good: check the belt tensioner and idler pulley. I'm betting on the alternator.

the two the fan belt is worn and needs to get replaced, or the belt tensioner is worn and desires changing. At 60K miles i could replace the belt besides. you ought to have the potential to tell if the tensioner is undesirable with the help of ways no longer ordinary you ought to coach it to loosen the belt up for removing. it is going to furnish you a great style of hysteria. If the tensioner is comparatively ordinary to coach, replace it additionally. it is going to be a standard restore, whether it relies upon on how lots room you ought to paintings on the front of the motor. the a number of smaller front wheel stress autos could be a undergo to paintings on. easily relies upon on how lots stuff is in the way.
