What can I use an External Hard drive for?

I just got an external hard drive and I would like to use it for extra room. Is it possible to be able to store programs like Itunes and all my photos and still be able to use the programs if I delete them off of my internal hard drive? I have no ideas what kind of perks there are for external hard drives other then a back up, any explanation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I have an external hard drive that I put photo's, music, ect on since I am no long using or it's just really old. As long as you have the external hard drive on you can open, edit, delete those files. You can install programs to the external hard drive, but you have to select that hard drive when installing the programs. However depending on the hard drive it may run like crap or using the files from it would make them also run like crap.

How about this: lets say you clone your hard drives and your computer then latrer on crashes, you are covered, since you have a backup. the alternative: you're screwed.
