Zipper installation for jackets?

I got a plaid jacket for Christmas which fastens with buttons and a belt, but already, the buttons' threads are loose and one even fell off and I've only worn it once so far. I was thinking of having a zipper installed on it. Can that possibly be done?

A zipper can be added but it will make the jacket much tighter because when you add a zipper, you're going to lose close to 4 inches around the waist. So that you won't lose the size in circumference, see if you can find a seamstress who will add 4 inches of material or so to the front in order to give room for adding a zipper. It should be pretty easy for a seamstress and shouldn't cost you more than $15 including material and labor. Choose a color that is in the plaid that you can stand, maybe black. It should come out nice.
