How do believers rationalize their "sins"?

If one truly believes that the wages of sin is death, that going against God's word results in an eternity in hell, how does one rationalize the commission of sin? If you truly believe such a dire punishment awaits you, wouldn't you be too scared to slip?

To put it in perspective: If you knew you were being followed around by a sniper at all times, too skilled to ever be seen, who said "Sin and I shoot you", only those who truly want death would sin. The rest of us would be too scared to ever do anything we know the sniper would dislike. How can you have a 'heavenly sniper' ready to shoot your soul into Hell if you die in your sins, yet still sin?

That just doesn't make sense to me. It appears to be the behaviour of someone who doesn't truly believe they'll be punished, kind of like people who commit murder in death penalty states.

What's the rationalization behind this apparent contradiction?

Update:

Re: Repentance.

1) In this world death can come at any time. We all know this. If you truly believe in Hell, why risk dying in your sins?

2) Repentance is supposed to be for those who truly regret their sin. It seems insincere to repent of a sin when you know you'll be forgiven beforehand. Kind of like saying "Sorry" for breaking a window when you knew dad wouldn't ground you for it before you threw the rock.

You know sin will result in hell. You know there's a risk of dying before asking for forgiveness. How can someone who truly believes this take the risk in the first place?

Update 2:

Seriously. I don't understand it. If I believed in this stuff I'd be too scared of Hell to ever sin, no matter how tempting it may be. Eternity's a lot longer than the brief pleasure of a mortal indulgence, after all.

Interesting observation. Maybe some believers are just name-droppers who like to feel as though they have friends in high places? Lol :)

The death penalty doesn't deter crime and as a bargaining tool for the prosecution, it produces a percentage of false confessions and false accusations. Sometimes we even execute people we later can prove were innocent. Also a life sentence is cheaper than the average stay on death row and the execution. And yet we have rationalized in the USA that we need the death penalty.

    Why?

EDIT: To answer your question more directly:

Maybe they are just oppositionally bonding with their God, testing limits, seeing if they will really be forgiven and loved time after time. And I'm addressing the issue here of Repeat Offenders that keep saying Never while they are doing it again, just to walk away and start all over repeating the same pattern. I don't believe in consequence after death. Heaven and Hell are here and now on Planet Earth in this life time. Open your eyes and take a look. "Eternal Consequence" is the gift we leave our children with the decisions we make today.

Probably the same way non-believers do. After all we are all sinners who fall short. If you have to rationalize sin, then chances are there is no difference there.

Consider this. Eve was deceived by Satan to go against God, Adam was not deceived, he flat disobeyed. Because of this Adam could not speak for Eve and save her from being punished, because at least he could have told Yahweh, she was deceived by Satan, which she was, Yahweh never told her Himself to follow that law, so she didn't disobey Him. If she knew not to take from the tree than she heard it from Adam, she disobeyed Adam, not God, and Satan made her question Adam. She would have never questioned God, this is why Satan approaches her and not Adam. The Bible says Adam seeing her example and that she did not appear to be dead, and how desireable the fruit was, also then took a bite, but he was told specifically be Yahweh not to do it. She could have been saved if Adam had not disobeyed, but because he did, neither one of them could be spared the consequece for the act. Yahweh had no choice then but to take away the garden and allow the evil outside the garden to be made visible to them as well, since they knew now it was there.

This is the world we are in today, it promises death for us, because Sin is evil and it's all around us, evil opposes good. Life is good, death opposes life. Now we live in the world where we see both good and evil all around us. Because if this we are influenced either one way or another. This is how we are sinful. We are born into sin death. In this world you can count od dying, no one has found a way in it yet to keep that from happening right, that is believers and non believers alike, because the Bible reminds us "We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God."

Therefore then the promise of Yahweh who brings us a Savior from this condition is to restore all those who wish to be counted in a new perfect Kingdom, where evil does not exist, and sin does not exist as well. Sin is the conflict of both good and evil in us all, when we are restored the conflict is over because one side wins over he other. The ones whose faith now makes them a beakon of light in the evil of this world for the Glory of Yahweh will be made righteous and placed in the New world to come. The ones whos lack of faith causes them to discourage the Glory of Yahweh will be put in with The Evil one (D'Evil) in a place also prepared for them and marked for drstruction.

So where you see a God who is bent on destroying us because we sin, I see a God who knows that we are already dying and is bent on restoring us to His glory. The way He's doing it isn't what I would do, but He has considered all theoptions and selected the best choice, which His reasoning in such matters far surpasses anything I can come up with. The important thing is althoug we are dying in this world today, there is a plan for redemtion by our Creator. He's done His part, the next move is ours.

Hi, the way I see it is we all sin. Being a Christian and serving the Lord does not give you the right or liberty to continue sinning. You are supposed to, with the help of the Lord and his Holy Spirit lead a better life. However we are fickle and just human and God knows this, therefore we have to continually ask forgiveness. When you hurt someone else or sin against someone you should also ask their forgiveness. Teh bible says "go your way and sin no more".

We do not have a license to sin. Thankfully Gods Grace is suffienct and He will cleanse you of your sins if you ask Him to.

Why are you purposefully ignoring the Christian doctrine of repentance? You're quoting Romans Ch. 6 v. 23 yet you truncated the quote.

"For the wages of sin is death, ***but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord***."

We don't have a heavenly sniper behind us; we have a loving father who forgives us.

I believe in God, but I don't believe in sin.

Separation from God is the illusion that keeps me thinking that it's about me.

    It's not about me.

In the parable about creation in Genesis man hides from God, not because he ate the fruit, but because he was shamed by his nudity.

God was never bothered by the nakedness of man.

We are still hiding from a God that loves us.

All our sins are shames that we create to keep us feeling unworthy.

When someone feels guilty for something they think they did to you no amount of assurance will allow them to be comfortable in your presence.

God is beyond me, and I must surrender my ego or I will not be able to stand his presence.

Gods gift of free will compels him to leave us be when we think he's not available for us.

We bring about our own punishments and rewards in this manner.

To have peace of mind is to be able to commune with God.

True prayer is this communion, it's like praise but without that sense of brown nosing that we hear from pretentious people.

This is all that sin is.

Of course I have no need to break any of the laws so many are concerned with, it's just not part of me, spiritually I've outgrown the law.

I don't rationalize my sins, I try not to sin but I do sin and The Blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7b)

Jesus told Nicodemus, "You must be born again to see the kingdom of God."

Jesus is God's provision for my sins.

It would take up too much room to explain, you might try reading 1 John 9,10.

Any other part of the bible you would like to read before asking such an obvious question won't hurt you.

We all have a wounded and sinful nature that is inclined to sin. When we sin, if we repent, God forgives us.
