Can you carry on a garment bag onto a cruise ship?
I'm sailing Carnival Splendor and I was hoping to carry on only to expedite debarkation mostly, but also to make sure my bags arrive in my room. I was wondering about my garment bag. Online, they only give the dimensions 24"x 16", but it seems that a folding garment bag should be fine to carry on. Mine is a typical 42" x 23" x 4.5". Has anyone tried carrying on a garment bag?

You can carry almost anything that will fit through the x-ray machine.

It is a great idea to carry-on a small bag with you because the porters may take several hours -- perhaps as much as 1/2 day -- to get your bags to your room at the start of the cruise. Bring any medications, toiletries, swim suit etc in the bag you carry with you. You could use a folding garment bag for this purpose if it conforms (after folding) to the size specified by the ship for carry-ons. But my preference is to use something like a gym bag or small duffel bag.

I bring a crazy amount of luggage with me on board all sizes. I check everything with the porter, we tip them. Don't know if that makes a difference but I have never had an issue. The only thing I carry on is the documents needed, credit cards, electronics. medications. IOW I only bring what is necessary thru the line and let them deliver the rest. For christmas one year we brought presents and a small christmas tree. They won't limit you on luggage like the airlines.
