How much more should she grow?

I have a two year old filly. Who is coming three in April of 2010. Right now she is measured a tiny bit over 15.3 hands tall at the withers. She is on a very good diet and on a normal riding routine throughout the week. How much taller do you think she will get and end up being?

Update:

Okay. Seriously? She is MY horse and I will ride her when she is two if I want to. She has been checked by a vet and farrier and can be ridden and loped perfectly fine. You would be surprised how much build she has.

She is a Quarter Horse

Father is 15.3 and the rest of the linage from her side is 16 and above

Mothers side is around 15 all the way through.

Well from personal experience... a cremello mare that I used to have grew until she was 6 years old. she was a little over 15 hands and grew to 16 in those last 3 years... I have always heard that they will grow until they are 6. As for how much taller she will grow it just depends on the diet, the breed of horse, and bloodlines. Really no certain height . I can give you. I don't see her being over 16hh but I think she will grow a little more, they say they don't grow very much after 3 they just fill out.

a trick i've heard used is to take a string, I use a tape measure, and on the side of the leg measure from the middle of the knee, straight down to the coronet band Don't pull the string tight (tape measure works best ). If it says 15.6 inches, then that can be taken to be 15.6 hands. (the site below will give you instructions)

NOTE: BTW THE 15.6 hands was simply an example, not an accurate measurment

It's reall hard to tell. I know horses can keep growing until they're well onto 4 years old, so you really just have to wait. If shes 15.3 already, I'd say she'll probably grow at least a couple inches.

I would NOT be riding her. Like every other answer I give, I would suggest lunging. That way, you can be training her, and not potentially be damaging her from riding her so early. Correct lunging teaches balance, control, and focus. I would highly recommend looking into it, it makes a huge difference in all horses. If you have questions on how to lunge correctly, go ahead and email me.

    Good luck!

Horses usually aren't filled out or full grown until there 5 years of age. Guessing that your horse is a thoroughbred type horse because of how tall she is now, I would say 16.2 hands.

  • if she is quarter horse she might grow a little more and then stop... but is she is Thoroughbred then she could grow to be 16 -17 hands tall... hope this helps and from what i know they dont really stop growing till they are around 4

what breed is she? she has the slimmest chance of getting to 17hh if she is a warmblood.

    what are her parents height?

and my suggestion is she should only be lightly ridden until shes 3. like walk on a trail ride, turning in arena, ground driving, A LITTLE bit of trotting. 3 you can do more stuff, dont recommend canter til later in 3. 4 do stuff. 5 you can start really pushing her.

start too early, ruin bones. just look at the ex racehorses. there is a reason they're all broken down.

but it mainly depends on the horses bones, some (rare at 2) are developed enough, others arent(almost all).

YOU CAN RIDE YOUR HORSE AT 2 YEARS OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNOW THIS GIRL. SHE'S NOT RIDING THIS HORSE INTO THE GROUND!!!! NO ONE ASKED IF SHE SHOULD BE RIDING IT AT THIS AGE. JUST ANSWER THE STATED QUESTION. there is also no such thing as 15.6 hands. a hand is only 4 inches!!!!! so it would technically be 16.2

shouldn't you not be riding her till shes like 3??? cause couldn't you mess up tendons and muscles and joints and stuff??

and it depends what breed. i would probably say 16h+

firstly she shouldn't be ridden untill she is at least 3

i think she may make 16.2+
