need help getting my 360 controller to work on my pc?

im on a computer running windows 7.

i went to the microsoft website and downloaded the windows 7 driver for my xbox 360 controller and when i go to the device maneger it says that the controller is working properly.

but i cant get it to work with any of my emulators. i'm using ZSNES, VBA, gens (genesis emulator), and planning on downloading project 64.

so far i have had no luck getting my controller to work with anything.

can some one please walk me through the steps i have to take to make it work?

i'm using a wireless controller with an attached cord if that means anything.

i know these emulators are compatible with the controller because i did an extensive search for ways to get it to work and found pretty much nothing other than that it should work.

for ZSNES its saying i have to delete the .cfg files and i did that and it still wont register the controller. none of the emulators will.

There is no cord you can attach to a 360 controller to make it compatible with the PC. The cord you can plug into it is for charging only. In order to use a wireless 360 controller, you need to buy the wireless receiver. I'm pretty sure you can pick one up at Best Buy for $20.

Edit: I forgot to mention that your PC will still detect that you have the wireless controller plugged in. The only good it does is charging the battery if it's rechargeable.
