How to fix a "no signal" on my external monitor?

I have an acer laptop that I want to attach a 22" monitor to it. I attached the VGA cable, and when I turn on the laptop, the starting screen Windows XP loads on the 22"monitor, but when it gets done, the screen on the laptop pops on and the other monitor shows "no signal" I downloaded a driver from acer, but still no go. Any suggestions?

There may be an F-key at the top of the keyboard that must be pressed, perhaps when holding down the special laptop shift key, the one that converts part of the keyboard into a numeric pad.

Alternately, there may be a menu item by running an acer utility that will allow you to display both screens or turn off the laptop screen.

The acer web page forum is a good place to ask if a search for "external monitor" does not find the solution.
