What could be wrong with our guinea pig?
We have a 3.5 year old male guinea pig. We took him to a vet today because when we woke up he had a little bit of green nasal discharge and appeared to not have been eating/drinking lately. He also had unusual shaped feces that we had to ease out for him. He had x-rays and everything looked okay but he was dehydrated and had lost 6 ounces in 1-2 weeks. He is not himself and staying inside of his house. He has lost little bunches of hair (probably 5-10 strands at once, not visible on his body but in the cage shavings). He does have gas. He did take food from a syringe and drank water, and ate some green pepper. He is not talkative and very tired. The vet said he should improve by tomorrow, but I am still concerned. Has anyone else had this problem?
We gave him a "shred-a-box" treat and a log filled with hay/"honey" coated seeds on Christmas, and believe this may have caused an issue. Does anyone have any helpful hints for what we can do to help him, or what this may be?
He has dramatically improved today and is beginning to independently eat and drink. He is not 100%, but much more like himself. My concern is still on his unusual feces--we are treating it as an impaction. Please see my other question regarding this.

You need to get him to an EXOTIC vet asap as he has two different things going on at once and yes he would fell like doo doo.The green means he has an upper respiratory infection and in a guinea pig that is very bad news. I just treated my little boy for one and it took him 8 weeks to get over it and it was caught before he was this ill.
The second thing that is going on with him is male guinea pigs loose the strength in the muscles that control the anus and they develop huge impactions, often the size of a ping pong ball, you will have to help him pass these. This is a very smelly mess, however if you do not do so he will be in pain.Once this starts you are gong to have to empty his bowels all the time and if you do he will live a comfortable life.
General vets simply have not gone to the extra schooling to know these things. One thing that is very touchy with guinea pigs is they are very sensitive to medications, what will cure your cat will kill your guinea pig, the exotic vet knows all of this from the extra schooling.

Did you know that Guinea Pigs can also get similar diseases like humans?
I think that you should trust your vet with what he/she said about your piggy, however if it does not improve within the next two days you should get a second opinion on the matter.
Some studies have been done, and proved that animals and creatures such as rodents can develop some forms of cancers. I do not recommend taking this into account and starting to panic and worry that your piggy has cancer. I am sure he will be fine. Just like I said, give him a few days, if no improvement, seek other help to get a second opinion.

take her to the vet as rapid as you may because of the fact no longer eating won't be able to be sturdy and he or she's no longer shifting because of the fact perchance she does not have sufficient power to because of the fact she isn't eating or shes getting slightly older plus she gave delivery 2 days in the past which wasn't very lengthy in the past or she won't be eating because of the fact perchance you replaced her nutrition or she's uninterested in an identical nutrition so yeah. attempt looking it on the cyber web that's no longer yahoo.

i have a feeling he might pass away, i might be wrong. make sure you give him lots and lots of vitamin C but not acidic stuff like oranges, limes, lemons, other. make sure to put Vita Drops in his water bottle every time you refill it. lettuce, fruits and veggies every day.
