Toque is from the french word for a chef's hat but it has come into common usage across Canada at least to mean the knitted, "sock hat" that is ubiquitous in cold weather. It can be worn rolled up and perched atop the head, rolled partially down to cover the skull or rolled all the way down to cover the ears and forehead. In the later position it is a vital item in preventing hypothermia and death in sub-zero temperatures. Experienced northern travelers always carry at least two and two woolen scarves in their vehicles throughout the winter months, thereby saving countless lives.
