Do you ever take your engagement ring off?

I got an engagement ring on Christmas day, so it's only been a few days that I've been wearing it. This morning I noticed my stone is already loose in the setting, I think it happened when I dropped it on the bathroom floor yesterday. So far, I've been taking my ring off to shower, cook when I'm dealing with stuff like raw meat, or when I'm doing my hair. I have to admit I've also been touching it and rubbing the center stone like crazy. Whenever I wash my hands, I'll wipe the ring down too.

Should I just leave it on all the time except to clean it, to prevent it from dropping? Was it me dropping the ring that caused the stone to become loose or could it have been something else? I'm going to get the prongs tightened today, but I want to prevent this from happening again. Thanks.

Update:

I rub the stone with a jewelry cloth, not my fingers, always trying to keep it as shiny as possible. I know that's not necessary, but I'm just in awe with it!

Update 2:

I'm getting a lot of useful info here. Thank you everyone. For the person who asked, the setting is a Tacori.

i got engaged christmas eve last year. at first i used to take it off at night because i was not used to it but now i usually leave it on to sleep. i take it off to shower, (wet hands make the ring more likely to slip off and slide down the drain) do dishes and when using cleaning products but other than that i always have it on. it's possible dropping it at exactly the right angle could have loosened the stone but it could also me a manufacture's flaw. taking it back to where you got it to get fixed is a good idea. with my ring we have to go every six months to get it inspected, and if the stone falls out during the six months the store will replace it. i always used a paper towel or my hand to wipe my ring off after washing my hands. its a diamond, they are so strong the only thing to cut a diamond is a diamond. conrgats, when is the big day?

Hi! I have a ring I wear on my right hand that has alot of details in it but the problem with it, is that the side diamonds get loose OFTEN. This is because I barely ever take it off so I DO knock it into things. I've had to get one of the side diamonds get replaced 3 different times. SO, I decided that I would take it to a jeweler every other month to get it tightened to prevent from losing the diamonds again. Usually jewelers won't charge much for that, so maybe you could do that? I know you want it to be shiny all the time, but stop rubbing the center stone so much! Your stone will stay shiny if you just continue to take it off during the times that you say you do to prevent any kind of build up.

P.s. the engagement ring my boyfriend bought for me is a Tacori setting too...love it :) Which one is yours? I look at their website all the time and just admire how beautifully detailed their rings are. I would go and get the diamond RESET in the setting, it shouldn't be loose like that. Tacori makes really hefty prongs to hold in the stone so its very possible the jeweler didn't do the best job at setting the stone.

Here is what you need to know. Every time the ring is banged on something, the setting has the potential to become loose. This is because the diamond is harder than metal, so the impact of the bang will always damage the metal not the diamond. Even if you bang just the band of the ring, the metal will absorb the inertia of the diamond. Over time, everyday activities could cause a setting to become loose. If you will be doing heavy work, you should take the ring off for this very reason.

Bacteria from food and other kinds of dirt can easily be trapped under your diamond, so its good to take it off during food prep too. You can brush very softly with warm water and a baby toothbrush to dislodge any dirt or soap scum from under the diamond, but this will not affect the setting itself.

You just got your ring on Christmas day and it is already loose? Thats not normal. Either you dropped it on just the wrong angle, or that ring is cheap. Settings have been known to come loose over a l o n g time, or from a specific incident. However, a good quality ring should be able to take the impact of daily activities. If you continue to have problems with this ring, then you may consider having the stone set by another jeweler.

*** I do the same as Luv2Answer. Once I get home, I make dinner and clean the house a bit... shower in the morning... my rings are cumbersome for these activities. Putting on my ring is part of my leaving the house checklist along with wallet and keys :)

    1) your stone should NOT be loose unless the did a poor job of setting it. Take it back today so you do not lose your lovely diamond. They need to fix it. I am sure it is not loose because of anything you have done. I have dropped my ring several times and whacked it accidentally and nothing has happened to the diamond. Not sure what kind of setting you have, but I have a 6 prong platinum cathedral setting so mine sits rather high. I am a teacher and do a lot with my hands while wearing my ring and it has been fine.

    2) I take my ring off generally at home and put it on after I am dressed and ready to go out. I don't want to gunk it up with hairspray, lotion, soap etc. I have been wearing it a year and it looks as beautiful as the day I got it. I do not clean in it or really do anything in it. I do not even sleep in it.

Also, do not use toothpaste to clean it as I am sure some people will suggest. it is too abrasive. Use windex and give it a soak, then you can gently use a small brush if you need to to get in the crevices. I go by my jewelers at least once a month and have them professionally clean it and at that time they check the setting to make sure the diamond is secure.

I do not exercise in it.

Congrats on your engagement. I got engaged a year and a half ago and married last June and I still look at my ring in awe everyday because it is so beautiful to me.

I take my ring off when I am handling raw meat, house cleaning, applying lotion and doing my hair too. It seems bizarre that the setting got loose so easily just from dropping it once. I always wonder if those invisible setting things make the setting less stable than the ones where the prongs go up and over the diamond.

At first I used to put my ring in my pocket or on the counter...a safe distance away from the sink. It only took one time when I couldn't find my ring in my pocket (it was there, but on the side, so I didn't feel it) that it threw me into a full panic that I lost my ring. Now if my ring is off of my finger, it is in its box on my dresser...the same place every single time.

I like touching the center stone of my ring a lot too. And I've been married for years and still haven't grown tired of that.

  • NO gemstone or setting is indestructable....many household cleaning solutions can and do warp/pit the metal settings (golds or platinum) that are popularly used....prongs can accidentally be bent or broken which risks the stone dropping out and getting lost.

When you are not wearing the ring, return it to the box it came in and have a safe place to keep that box-I reccomend a dresser drawer. That way the ring is protected by it's box and the box is in a place that's safe-AND you know exactly where it is.

Taking the ring off while working with raw meat is wise....bacteria from raw meat can get trapped in the little curves and spaces within the ring, thus getting transfered to other foods-hence cross contamination.....carving knives, paring knives, etc can slip and damage the ring's settings.

Your hands may be swell slightly during the night-your ring could be uncomfortably tight come morning.

Moisture from baths & showers/shampooing can get trapped underneath the band-if the skin there remains moist, it's a prime breeding ground for bacteria & fungus/yeast resulting in an itchy rash that prevents wearing any rings at all until it clears up (dermatitis)

Plus shampoos, bath soaps/gels,conditioners can leave an ugly dirt collecting film on the stone thus dulling it and requiring one to clean the ring....and the more you 'fuss' with a ring, more greater the chance you can loosen the stone(s). Soaps & detergents, no matter how mild, can literally eat away at certain stones-for example, opals. Included in that are pearls (not a stone)

I also NEVER put my rings on until AFTER I have applied lotions, hair sprays, etc or perfumes...you have NO idea how the particular chemicals in any product will affect fine jewelry. This is MANDATORY with natural pearls and opals.

be aware the proper cleaning of all your different gemstones-while 'sonic' cleaning is fine for diamonds, you NEVER clean peridots that way....ditto pearls and opals.

Better to be safe than sorry.

In the early weeks of my engagement there was no way I’d take my ring off. As time went on, I worried about harsh cleaners damaging the stones, raw meat getting stuck in the prongs and it falling off when I get sweaty after working out. I would take my ring off and put it in a safe place whenever doing household chores, gardening or running. It wasn’t that I didn’t love the ring – I just didn’t want anything to happen to it.

My husband and I have been married for many years and I wear my engagement ring to the office, parties, work functions and whenever we go out. But I typically take it off when I get home or if we’re spending time at home.

My wedding band is a different story. I deliberately chose a plain band that would hold up to cooking, the gym and cleaning. Since we were married I’ve only taken it off once when I was in the hospital.

I take mine off when I shower, sleep, cook, and clean the house(don't want to risk a cleaner damaging it). Obviously there may be other instances that are not everyday things...if I'm going to the beach and will be getting in the water, doing yard work or anything else that may be potentially damaging to the ring. Usually day to day though....it is off when I got to bed at night and kept on my dresser by my deodorant and perfumes. Then after I shower in the mornings, I remember to put it on when I'm using all my smelly stuff. :) My word of advice...insure it. I know I would much rather have the original ring my fiance gave to me, but if by chance it is lost/stolen, you can get another.

I took mine off when I went to bed, when I took a shower, when I was working at the computer (which is most of my day), when I was washing my hands, or any other time that I didn't want my ring to get damaged or it felt uncomfortable.

Honestly, expensive jewelry like engagement rings aren't meant to be worn every day. It's too easy to lose a gem. I've known people who are jewelers say that you SHOULDN'T wear your ring except for special occasions, simply because it's so easy for the jewelry to get damaged. Of course, few brides-to-be will listen to that, but it's advice to consider at any rate.

Now I wear my band all the time, which matches my husband's. I'm not wearing my engagement right now because for all 3 years I wore it, it was too loose. I can't decide if I want to get it sized down (my finger is a tiny 4.5), or have a spacer put in for when my knuckles swell (age, arthritis) so I can continue to wear it.

Stones should NOT come loose like that... this ring is poorly crafted. I'd take it to a DIFFERENT jeweler to see what's really going on. Where is it from?

You do take it off quite a bit, you may lose it! I only take mine off when I'm putting lotion all over my body because I know it will cloud up the diamonds. Very rarely I take it off for showers or sleeping.

I say stop touching the diamonds so much, don't take it off as much, and have someone else check out the ring. Of course someone who sold a bad setting isn't going to tell you they crafted it poorly. They will simply tighten it... then you know what will happen? It will get loose and you'll LOSE the diamond for good!!
