my cat ?! baddddddd hygiene?

My cat wont like lick his back to get all the matts outta his fur. I have to hold him down and cut it out. He is extremely long haired and it looks like he has baby fur under the long fur and i think thats whats getting tangled. Its nasty tough and he hates when i have to cut it off of him. It gets so bad it could almost make heat spots. I brush him and everything and take care of him.. HELP!

Update:

he's ridiculous though. I do brush him and its a huge fight. hes not a fancy cat; just a barn cat we saved. his name is chicken. he's a big baby and is white w. black spots. He hates brushing and will bite like crazy its such a big fight.

I have a 16 year old female (spayed ) Himalayan that got mats really bad this past summer. At her age, and weight, she couldn't take care of herself adequately. No matter how much I tried to keep her brushed, mats still appeared, and I couldn't get them out without hurting her...........so..........

I called my VET, asked how much it would cost to have her shaved or clipped SHORT. They told me that if they did NOT have to SEDATE her to do it, it would only be $60. Since her mats were making BOTH of us miserable, and I'd already cut off what I could ( she looked TERRIBLE ), I went ahead and took her in......to MY VET.

She behaved wonderfully, got all of her back, stomach, and legs clipped to about 1/4", but left her face, tail, and paws. I think they call that a "semi-lion" cut. Anyway, it was $60 WELL SPENT, and her hair is growing out beautifully...and I brush her EVERY DAY, now. Hopefully, we'll never have mats again........

Hope this helps YOU and your baby........Check with your vet and see what he says. Vets are cheaper than groomers, especially if they don't bathe the cat........Good luck.

Ok well first of all I would take her to a groomer that can get the mats safely. I know you take care of him and sometimes cats just have alot of hair but on hot days make sure that hes inside and that he has cool water to drink:). Some cat's don't like to be brushed like yours. The reason he doesn't like to be brushed is because matted fur can be very painful to all animals. It almost pinches the skin so that maybe a reason he's not wanting to reach on his back to lick his back fur.

If he's getting matted, you're not brushing him often enough. Long-haired cats cannot prevent/remove mats on their own. You probably need to brush him out every day.

long haired cats must be groomed daily. I would take him to a professional groomer to get a good start then make a habit of brushing him every dar.

yeah most long-haired cats require grooming

I am now a big fan of short-haired cats due to that fact

regrettably, i think of your mom has psychological wellbeing subject concerns and you're no longer likely to cajole her that the situation of her house is undesirable for her or her cats. possibly, in case you refuse to circulate to with your baby she'll freshen up her act. yet i does no longer anticipate it. i'm sorry
