Well guess what, a crested gecko is PERFECT for you. They live in temperatures of 72-80F, so room temperature is good. If your house is really cold like mine you might need a heat pad. They are also pretty cheap a single adult can live in a 20 gallon arboreal.
They are also good for handling as they have a gentle nature and won't bite or whip you, unlike other lizards. They may be a little jumpy but they will calm down once they get used to you.
These lizards also stay pretty small (smaller than a bearded dragon), are easy to feed, and don't require so much space like some other lizards do.
These lizards are also commonly available and pretty cheap (not past $200) in pet stores like Petsmart and cheaper from adoptions. Price, in a great part, depends on where you live.
These lizards don't require lighting as they are nocturnal, and they are also easy to feed, are hardy, don't grow very big, don't require UVB, don't need hot temperatures, are commonly available, easy to handle, and are great for beginners. I would recommend this to you more than leopard geckos.

A leopard gecko, but you would need a 20 gallon tank for when he gets full grown, so he has enough space. of course you would need some sort of light. A heat pad will work.
