Hello Lynne, An hour or 2 would be best, especially if it's a heavy workout. When you eat your stomach diverts a lot of blood flow to the digestive organs and away from sketetal muscles. And, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to shuttle to ground up food to the small intestine. You could still do light exercise but it would be best to wait so that you get the best workout and avoid feelings of sluggishness and nausea. A good food to eat before exercise would be a salad with some chicken, turkey or egg, an apple or banana and a big glass of water. Lettuce and greens are more easily digested and have a lot of nutrients and water. The lean protein would be good before or after the workout to help replenish muscular activity. And, if you do this instead of the protein drinks or bars you woun't have the added preservatives, emulsifiers and artifical colorings. I hope this helps.
