How long should a throat virus (not strep) last?

I have had a throat virus (not strep) as I have been taking Augmentin 875 mg for a sinus infection. I have had inflammation and sharp pains in my throat, very red tonsils, post nasal drip and a couple white patches on the tonsils. How long should this last? I will drink plenty of fluids and rest more to let it run it's course. I've already been to the doctor. Thanks!

Update:

Thank you! I hadn't even thought of it but that explains why I would have gotten these numerous white patches after having been on Augmentin for 3 days. I'm on Day 4 of Augmentin and have 6 days left. I'm going to try the supplements tonight - I appreciate your help!!!

It's unclear to me whether you are still on the Augmentin, but it complicates the picture a bit.

Firstly, a "Non-Strep" sore throat does NOT equal Viral. There are plenty of bacterial throat pathogens other than strep, and they *would* respond to Augmentin.

On the down side, Augmentin that was given for a pre-existing sinusitis *does* predispose you (esp if you have big tonsils anyway) to thrush (yeast infection) of the throat and that *would* cause the white patches you describe.

Try taking supplements of acidophilus or lactobacillus (Lactinex)

but if the throat stays white and red then get your doctor to Rx

Mycelex Troches: these lozenges may be Rx only, but they are utterly safe and they do kill thrush well.

it may desire to be hypersensitivity appropriate or hypersensitive reactions could have began it. absolutely everyone could get hypersensitivity testing. besides, gargle with warm salt water and/or Listerine, devour fruit , fruit juice and different healthful meals , take warm showers to sweat out the pollution, take ibupropen , and a nasal decongestant and get quite a few relax.another notice, attempt an antihistamine via fact the sole drugs quicker or later- if it helps plenty this could properly be hypersensitive reactions.
