fish tank water looks rusty?

I got a new but little 10 gallon fish tank for Christmas. I got it all setup water, gravel, heater, power filter, some plastic plants and decoration stuff. My tap water smells horrible I wouldn't even drink it but I have softened water with through my water softener. Tap water if full of rust too.

I filled the tank with water from softened faucet and it's ran a couple days. I bought a 5 in 1 test kit and everything test's good except for I'm guessing the PH. It's a bit on the high side in the 8 - 8.4 range. My test goldfish don't seem to mind. It's only been about a week since I set it up but the water looks either like a really light tan or yellow. I can't see it having algae already with just two tiny goldfish.

Any ideas what I can do?

Thanks

Your tank is cycling. The reason that your test kits showed that everything waz fine is because there was nothing in the tank that produced ammonia. Do some water changes and just watch your fish carefully. The color should return to normal in a week or so.

P.S. I hope you have a bigger tank for you goldfish when they get bigger
