Racing New Years Resolutions?
So alot of talk is going on at the moment about new years resolutions, so I would like to know what your new years resolution is regarding horse racing. It can be anything or everything its just a fun question to see what some of your aims for 2010 are.
Well for me one of my biggest things is to refine my eye, so pick out more winners by looks and also to start being able to pick out some good yearlings. And then move onto being able to pick out a good foal.
Also improve on my knowledge of bloodlines.
And of course meet new people and learn as much as I can!
So what about you, what are your aims, goals and resolutions for 2010 regarding Horse Racing?
Sandra. S those are all fantastic and something I would also like to focus on more in the future. Track Conditions is a hard one to crack, we had a period here in Australia where horses who have NEVER won on the wet before were winning on Heavy 10's! (the heaviest track rating) We ended up putting it down to the fact that the horses just got used to the tracks and it become something that you had to ignore.
Good Luck with all of that though! And it was a great year for me as well but this one sure will be alot better!

My resolution is to closely follow my 2 yr old filly's progress and training and to make sure that Iam present when she runs her first race in SoCal next fall. Hopefully she will break her maiden on this first outing!....
Added Info: Hey Jess! Make sure you wager some of your money on the progeny of "Good Journey" He's a great stallion in AussieLand as you probably know. He's now on his second crop of youngsters here in America.

Definitely to be more selective with my punting dollar. Instead of spending an afternoon at the local pub-tab and more times than not going home with less money than I started the day with, I intent to only have a wager on a horse when Im almost certain it will return a dividend. That could mean waiting weeks on end for the right bet.

I had a great year this year...Your resolutions are my resolutions, plus beside the norm..I'm going to pay more attention to..
- Workouts
- Turf vs. Dirt- Horses are either main track horses or turf horses, not both. It is very rare that a horse will run well on both surfaces. Breeding plays a major factor here, as there are physical aspects of a horse which make the horse better on the turf or dirt.
- Track Condition- Even though I do now, I plan on taking track condition more into consideration.
- Class Drop-downs - I do usually take this into considering normally, however, I've notice more so then in the past, that horses that are significantly dropping in class from their last race, are usually a threat. Most significant class drops are, Maiden Special Weight to cheap Maiden Claiming, Claiming to another Claiming with a significantly lower claiming price, Allowance to Claiming and Graded Stakes to Allowance or Claiming. Normally, I just get into stake racing, but if time permits I like to dabble in these as well.
- Layoffs- I noted a lot of Layoffs this past year. And, noted if the horse(s) last race was coming off a layoff, the horse is bound to improve this time out. The past race was "needed" and will usually not indicate the horse's true ability. In the past performance section if a race was coming back from a layoff..going to pay more attention to this.
Usually, I pay attention to the basics (as well as in the above) and do quite well..however, I want to incorporate more to my handicapping skill as to incorporate more of the above than normally..if I don't improve or get worse, I will then go back to the basics and what I know...Good Question for us race fans..
Best in 2010 :)
