Can a ct scan really see brain aneurysms?
Hello,
My friend was going into the army, and before she entered she had to do a few exams. She was given a regular ct scan with no contrast, and they found a aneurysm in her brain. So she was discharged, but they won't do surgery on her because its too small and more damage can be done to her if she had surgery to remove it. So what do they do when they know she has one? Also my doctor said that ct scans do not show blood clots in the brain until they rapture, but they found my friends, so can they see brain aneurysms with a plain ct scan? Thanks for the help.

Aneurysms on CT without contrast are difficult to see. Especially if they are small, either one hell of a radiologist spotted that aneurysm, or there isn't really one there. The difficulty is that a CT is a 3D image that is put into a 2D view on the computer (or in the old days on film) overlapping structures can often distort the view of each other, making one vessel look enlarged in certain areas (indicative of an aneurysm). During my radiology course, we were never asked to identify aneurysms without contrast, and I have to admit it would be very difficult to see. Given this, I would be a bit skeptical that they actually saw and aneurysm.
I hope this helps!

An unruptured aneurysm can be detected on a noncontrast CT however it is not a great study and small aneurysms may not be seen. CT with IV contrast is a much better imaging modality for detecting aneurysms. If she has a known aneurysm she will need to have periodic repeat scans to make sure the aneurysm is not enlarging as it may then require surgery.

Yes, you can absolutely see an aneurysm in a CAT scan. That is how they are often diagnosed.
PS here is a link that proves my point.. a CT scan showing an aneurysm. Look on google images for more.
