how can I block out noises when trying to get to sleep?

I have a downstairs bedroom, and I was trying to get some sleep to stay up late tonight. My sister was in the nearby living room, and, even with my door jammed shut, I could still hear her annoyingly loud voice. As the living room is one of the central areas of our house, closing the doors to that will not make much difference as someone will soon open them again to pass through. Does anyone know how to block out noise when trying to relax and get some rest? (I would imagine ear phones are quite uncomfortable to wear at night.)

Update:

btw, I did change the question's genre to general health, but then when back to edit and the website seemed to change it back to 'babies and newborns'...

your own background or "white" noise to cover the other noises coming from the house...we use a fan in our room when we sleep. We use either a humidifier or a white noise machine in our sons room when he sleeps which is especially helpful for his naps during the day.

Earplugs may be your only option for today though.
