I use a $100 POD Studio GX that i bought at guitar center. It's a little external interface that is connected to your computer via USB. All you need is a standard 1/4". instrument cable and some decent headphones and everything else is pretty straight forward.

There are probably cheaper ones available from M-Audio. Just look up "M-Audio Interface"

But if you want to go cheaper. You can buy a 1/4" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Stereo Jack Adapter. Then what you'll do is plug the Adapter into the mic input in your computer [color: pink], then plug your bass into the adapter. **I wouldn't really recommend this because there could be some compatability, latency errors and the sound isn't too great depending on your sound card.
