Problem with Garbage Disposal?

I recently moved into a new apartment in my same complex and I think the previous tenet broke the disposal. Unfortunately, I can't just have the building guy fix it since I have a cat and I'm not supposed to (I'm a college student, I don't have an extra $600 for a deposit or an additional $100/month in pet rent). Whoever was here before just kept pouring food down the drain and it's starting to smell a wee bit. I've already tried to dissolve it with draino foamer but it hasn't helped. I tried unplugging it and replugging it to see if that would restart it but nothing's worked.

Any tips? Either to get it working again or to dissolve the crap that's in there so it'll wash away and stop smelling.

Update:

I've lived here 3 and a half years, manager hasn't found out about the cat yet. Plus, my window faces the building next door, you can't see it from the street. As for taking the cat to a neighbor, only one I know well enough lives next door to the manager; so not really an option. And anyone who's ever had a cat knows they don't like being locked away and will cry.....especially mine. It's a studio, you can't really hide a cat anywhere.

Tip #1 never put draino into a kitchen drain. There is too much organic material.

Tip#2 They will see your cat sitting in the window when you are not home.

As you have already put draino into the disposal it is still in there or some. Bad for your complexion.

There is a reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Push it in. AND COVER THE DISPOSAL HOLE so the stuff does not come flying out.If it hums loosen with a broom handle or the allen wrench they sometimes leave. It goes in the hole on the bottom.

If it spins turn off and run some water. Plug up and do again until clear.

Run lots of cold water. If it won't drain but disposal runs the trap is clogged. Maintenance guy.

Life is too much fun to be bored. Take up dancing or something.

cut the Maine circuit breaker that controls power to your disposal. you will need a pipe wrench and gloves and a bucket. The water line should run from drain on first sink down and straight across into the garbage disposal. You will need to take the line loose at the main sink then unattache the connector to the straight pipe that runs into the disposal, this should leave you about six or eight inches of pipe sticking out of disposal. but place bucket under area before you remove pipes or what ever has it stopped up is going to spill out under your sink, use a flash light and look into pipe if you don't see anything, try running water through sink and into bucket. Other than this I don't know how to help, it's the only thing i can think of, but I'm a DIY person so not a pro. You may also want to try Drano.

use an allen wrench or a disposal wrench to "adjust" it. there's a hole at the bottom of the appliance for this purpose. avoid the draino.

To clarify some of the previous answers. 1st turn the switch on, if you get no response or noise turn it off and try the reset button on the bottom. If you then get a humming noise but no movement then you will have to use the allen wrench (an allen wrench looks like a small hex shaped rod that is slightly bent at both ends) to unjam the disposal. If you can not get it running with these methods or don't understand our instructions try calling a friend to help you or find someone to baby sit your cat for a day and call maintenance. It is likeley to be jammed, as these disposals can jam fairly easily. After you get it running again grind only small amounts of garbage at a time. If you try to dispose of a whole sinkfull at one sitting you risk clogging up the drain pipes and they can be expensive to unclog. (Personal experience) Dispose of large amounts of garbage in the trash.

PS better to temparily move the cat and call maintenance but if you do let them know about the drain cleaner.

Take the cat and all evidence of its residency in your apartment to somebody else's place, then call maintenance to come in and make repairs. You may have created more problems with the drano than with the cat.

The plumbing that drains the garbage disposal is probably plugged. It may have to be snaked ( a wire that clears the pipes). Ask someone in class, maybe they have a suggestion or knows someone that can do it for you. Get it done soon.

Do what we do, when the landlord or repairman comes around, put the cat away in a cage in the closet.
