As Deep Thinker points out in the comment regarding hydrocodone (vicodin), some analgesics contain acetaminophen (tylenol) which can cause severe liver and kidney damage with long term or excessive use. Unfortunately, our system of drug classification requires such compounding to avoid placing a drug in schedule II - which brings another layer of restrictions to their use. Oxycodone, morphine, dilaudid and other narcotics, each with different characteristics regarding the speed and duration of the relief they provide, are all CII, which means a doctor is going to be reluctant to prescribe them on an ongoing basis unless you have a chronic condition and go through the hoops of a pain management program. Otherwise, you're limited to NSAIDs which are effective but limited in the conditions they treat, and tramadol (ultram), which is a partial opiod agonist, moderately effective and not a controlled substance. However, some people do not tolerate it well and I've read of cases where it's triggered many of the same side effects and withdrawal complications as "real" opiates. If you can get it, oxycodone is probably the most effective, but does have its downside in tolerance, dose escalation, dependence, withdrawal and the typical opiate side effects.

From my research the least harmful narcotic pain medication is oxycodone. I have no idea why but if you do research you will come up with the same thing. I don't know what makes it any safer then any other opioid or opiate. I also found that Naproxen Sodium is farely safe. The worst is Hydrocodone because of the acetaminophen.

I just happened to see your question and wanted to share my experience. Sorry for the short answer I have to run in a few minutes. I suffered from migraines and my doctor is one of that is kind into natural remedies. He suggested the following to me. It doesn't take the migraines away, but it did wonders in preventing them: 1 multivitamin 1x daily 1 Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc supplement 2x daily 3 Fish Oil Capsules (I took one with every meal) 1 Vitamin B-Complex vitamin 1x daily He threw in 1 Vitamin-D caplet once a day, but I think that is because I work nights. Ask your doctor about this. Within a week, I went from almost daily migraines to maybe 1 or 2 a year. I felt a ton better once I started taking all this stuff. If your doctor gives you the OK to try it, go to a warehouse club (Sam's/Costco) if you have a membership. The vitamins there are much cheaper. I hope this helps.
