Is there any other way to open a bottle of wine without a bottle opener?

So I'm house sitting for my Mom today through Sunday, she's out of town with her boyfriend and I have to look after our elderly cat who requires medication 2x a day. I just got home from work, I'm exhausted, my boyfriend is at home, I'm spending this New Year's by myself and ALL I want is a glass of wine hahaha.

So I'm rummaging through every damn drawer in the kitchen, couldn't find the bottle opener, broke down and called my Mom and she took it with her for their champagne. We own no other bottle openers, sadly.

Is there any other way I can remove the cork?????

Update:

LOL Lyla have you actually done this?

Update 2:

Haha the kitty kitty got her meds as soon as I got home. I got it open finally, not without slight injury, though hahaha

This is not too safe but can be done if you are careful.

Get s screw driver and tap it down into the cork (lightly!) with a small hammer or meat mallet.

Be very careful and use very light strokes as to not break the neck of the bottle.

The cork will be floating inside of the bottle but at least it can be poured out.

Call the person you want to drink the wine with and ask them if they have a cork screw. Thats one way to ask someone over to have a glass of wine. Otherwise, get a corkscrew for future use.

Give the cat her meds, she's waiting. Cats cannot go without med.....Oh the cork. Screw a screw into it and pull with plyers... or you could try pounding it in with a screwdriver and hammer.

a screw, and the non-hammer side of the hammer :)

Can't officially advocate this (too much potential for disaster), but had this same dilemma once. I took the handle of a socket wrench and hammered the cork into the bottle (desperate people do strange things)

Once the cork moved a bit, it moved down the neck rather easily. You will need to use a knife or something long to displace the cork when pouring.
