Early Nissan Immobilizer system that uses a chip key. Did you use a non registered key and cause the car to go into LOCK MODE ? Chip key has a square plastic end, sometime but not always with a blue insert 1995 to 1998 Maxima's may also suffer from wiring harness issues. Gather up all the keys and either have a Mobile Computerized Lock Smith or Nissan dealership introduce those and new keys to the car. It is nice to have two complete sets of keys and keyless entry fobs.
