There are a lot of superstitious tales about New Years?

What are some of your superstitious tales relating to New Years Day? My family always says if you eat cabbage on New Years Day, you will have money all year long. Ive also heard that if you make a pair of pillow cases on New Years Day, it brings you good luck. I thought it would be interesting to hear from some of you about different superstitions that you do or have heard about on New Years Day.

those are great! i wish i had eaten cabbage yesterday!! and making pillow cases sounds like fun too!

My family has a lot of superstition about the "first footer" or the first person to step into your house in the new year - there are weird rules too, but i don't know where they come from

    - it's better if it's a man than a woman

    - it's best if it's a healthy adult

    - dark hair is better than light hair

    - it is really bad if they walk with a limp

    - it is good if they give you something

    - it is terrible if they take something from you

I still haven't had my first footer this year - I wonder who it will be!!
