Why Can't People Do Simple Research About Reptiles?

After answering questions here for a few weeks, I'm amazed that so many people have reptiles, but have absolutely no clue what they are doing. There is nothing wrong with asking questions, but a lot of them could be answered by googling care sheets and reading books before the animals were purchased. "What do i feed my iguana?" is the kind of question that irritates me to no end. Anyone else feel this way?

    I agree ABSOLUTELY 100%.

This is what happens when lots of people buy reptiles on impulse and then the reptile dies within weeks. Many people go to a pet shop and see a cute little turtle swimming in the tank, then they buyt it without realizing the expenses of the filter, tank, and other things it needs to survive. Just because a turtle is housed in a 10 gallon, doesn't mean it can live in there it's whole life.

Here's something from my personal experience.

One day, I saw this jerk who came to a pet shop, and his bratty kids saw some baby red eared sliders and immediatly bought them because they though they were so cute. In fact, the only things the person bought for the two baby red eared sliders where a tiny plastic container (maybe a critter keeper), some turtle food, and that was it. In fact the stupid pet store manager said it was okay. The pet store manager is also a stupid idiot because of the horrible advice he gave the equally idiotic purchaser. So much people ask me (cause I know lots about reptiles) what to feed a bearded dragon, for example. Why can't they just do some dang research and learn what the fricking thing eats holy crap!

Yes, you can tell that I feel extremely irratated. In fact, I think that there should be a law that before purchasing any animal, do your research and buy everything.

All too often, reptiles die in the thousands due to improper information, neglect, and ignorance.

    I agree 100%

It mainly seems to be kids that have either got them for presents or have some spare cash and think, " A snake/gecko would be cool" They don't realize how much effort and time you have to put in to keep it happy, active, healthy and the biggest problem for them is when they have shedding problems. Most owners that ask stupid questions, I will put money on this, watched a video on youtube of a snake feeding on live animals and thought cool ill get one.

Here are some reptiles and amphibians that I think are interesting, and you should be able to find lots of info online: - Snapping turtles - Softshell turtles - Hognose snakes - Rattlesnakes - Gila Monsters - Alligator lizards - Mudpuppies - Four-toed salamanders - Spadefoot toads - Tailed frogs

i agree. people say, ohmigosh, i just bought a (lizard, frog, gecko, snake) what do i feed it? they should have researched that before buying the animal. i think asking questions on here about your pet is perfectly fine for like a problem or something thet recently came up with your reptile. but it bugs the crap out of me that they have no common sense to learn what the fricken thing eats!

drives me nuts. Almost as bad as idiots who work in pet stores and know Absolutely nothing about the amimal they are selling but yet recomend things.

I admit I have had to ask people for help with a critter before. But its usually when someone dumps something on my door step.. and after I have googled everything I can find on it. ( like the mata mata thats here now. dumb *** moved and left it in the apartment. One of my friends found out and said " Oh I know who will take it")...

    Research Before you buy..or adopt.

Agree, but they sad thing about it is that no one really provides an APA style of

reference and most references come from the internet and anyone can write anything

    on the internet.

Last but not least, I wish they would Google it as well and then ask pet owners for their

    personal opinion.

    agreeing 100% :)

There are far too many questions like "i just got a turtle/gecko/snake, how do i look after it?", or like "i'm a vegetarian. Can my snake/ferret be too?",

personally i'm all up for petshops asking care questions before allowing people to buy the animal
