Is the Company Family Tree DNA legitimate & what is the benefit of the YDNA67 test over the YDNA37 test?

Hi all. I have been searching my family tree for years and have decided to organise at least one combined YDNA37+mtDNAPlus test with either a family member or myself.

I have two questions

a) Has anyone actually done this thru Family Tree DNA to confirm they are legitimate and

b) What is the extra benefit of doing the extra 38-67 markers test?

I have done the YDNA testing at Family tree DNA and they are legitimate. In fact, The Genegraphic Project is a real time effort to map how humankind populated the earth. It is a five-year research partnership between National Geographic and IBM with support from the Waitt Family Foundation, and public participation through Family Tree DNA. http://www.familytreedna.com/genographic-project.a...

The study that I am involved in is a single surname project and therefore I had to have a close male relative of that line donate the yDNA for me. Originally, we tested for less makers but as we got new members for our study we found that genetically we were split into two groups with some overlap by a few individuals. So, in an attempt to explain this phenomenon we ordered the 38-67 panels. We were fortunate that we found what we were looking for and are now able to categorize the study participants into three groups based on specific markers.

You can read the information posted on Family Tree DNA’s website and if you have additional questions you can post them there. Obviously, they are going to be the most knowledgeable on any DNA question. http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx?c=1

    a) I have done the mtDNAPlus test and yes they are legitimate. I would go so far as to say they are the market leader.

    b) The extra benefit is if you get a lot of matches at the lower resolution level this will narrow down your matches to people who are more closely related to you where you are more likely to be able to make a family tree connection.

The DNA database is still fairly small as far as statistics go, so there is a small chance you might not get ANY matches at this stage. I come from a very small DNA group only 24 low resolution matches and not a single high resolution match yet:-(

You need a male's DNA for the YDNA test that is why I haven't done it.

It is expensive but there are quite often "sales" so watch out for these. BTW There is a sale on right now!
