I recently published my first book. Any suggestions on free advertising to get the word out?

Go to your local library. Many libraries will have author visits and author reads, just like bookstores. Libraries really love to help promote local authors. Trust me, I'm a librarian!

Readings in local book stores and local libraries. Then again, this requires an author to be a bit of a performer.

You also might consider giving away some free copies to local book reviewers and independent book store owners.

A lot depends on what sort of book it is, niche books are easier to sell when self published than non-niche books. I'm assuming it is self published, because your publisher would be the one handling this if it wasn't. If it is a niche book, then look for non-book stores that cater to that market.

Facebook only works when you either have a specialty book or are well known. Web sites are the same way. It is easy to sell a book version of your web site on your web site, but people rarely go "Oh look a Facebook page by an unknown author, let me shell out thirty bucks." Craig's list is laughable, you might as well just endlessly chat people up at random in online chat rooms. Word of mouth? Well your Aunt Sarah will buy a copy just to show the folks at the home, but come on.

Self-published?

Chances are you won't be able to generate much interest let alone sell much. Self-published books are quite low on the literary totem pole and if you have to do your own advertising (and free besides) then you're in for a difficult ride. This is not meant to discourage you but rather give you some reality to the challenges you'll face.

I would recommend getting a Web site (preferably one with your own domain as subdomain sites do not look professional) and going from there. And while you're at it, brush up on your grammar and overall writing skills. Your opening sentence has a few errors needing correction.

Hmm, well, congratulations. I would advice to have a reading at a bookstore. It attracts people and they get a glimpse of the book from the author's point of view. It can really help. If people like it, then they will want to read more and find out what it is about.

Otherwise, I would recommend getting your book reviewed. There are many people who will be willing to review it and their reviwes could have a positive impact. You could send out requests to get it reveiewed. Ask other authors, journalists, etc.

Go to the website Writer's market 2010 and join that site you will get all the information a writer will need about marketing. Also check with Amazon to sell Kindle books.

I'm not quite sure, but I suppose you could tell your local paper to put an add in one of the pages or even write an article about it to send to them.

flyers and posters. if u go school, u can put them up in the wall and notice boards.
