is there a catalyst that speeds the reaction from N to N2?

Just out of curiosity....

Update:

so if N is in anything such as fertilizer, it is always N2?

    What N? Elemental nitrogen is N2. Take a breath. The air you just inhaled is 78% nitrogen, N2.

    In compounds, nitrogen can have most any subscript. Molecular nitrogen, nitrogen in the elemental state, is N2.
