You may not be interested in Mac, but that doesn't stop it from being the best.

If you have the money, definitely go MacBook. I am a Windows user, but also a computer builder. Macs are built to work. They are fast and, for the cost to hardware ratio, cheap. Also, upgrades cost only $30...windows vista to 7 for example though is $100-300
Another plus for Macs...they can run windows if you feel so inclined. If you install a boot-loader you can select an OS you want to load. You can with windows, except it is very difficult to run mac on a PC or any laptop that was designed with Windows in mind.
If you want only a windows computer and aren't willing to go through the task of installing boot-loaders (you would need to buy windows for a bootloader or look for a crack, but that can be dangerous) i am fond of Alienware. Many good reviews about Dell, however i am severly disappointed with costumer service.
They lost my first laptop, so we had to buy a second.
Guess what? A month or two later we got a bill for a "late fee" on the original laptop, which they expressly said they had no record of.
Don't go E-Machine!!! They similar hardware to other computers, but they just don't seem to be as quality built. Sorta like buying a Shelby GT with a Mustang engine...they are both good...but get what you pay for. E-machines will be cheaper quality.

1) Hp
2) Dell
3) Acer

These are some of the brands out here plus along with this I would also suggest that you should go for a refurbished laptops in these brands which are an excellent option.

Dell by a country mile.
Dell makes awesome laptops also they are totally customizable. Dell's support is second to none. Whats really cool is on every computer produced they put a tag on the bottom which you can use on their website. This will give you all the information about everything thats inside your computer. Also with this feature Dell allows you to download all the drivers for every specific part in your computer off their website.
PC's are made of all kinds of parts from all kinds of manufacturers and if say something happens to your computer and you need to reinstall the drivers it can be very painful and time consuming to track down who made that specific part your having problems with and then find the appropriate driver for it. Dell has made this very simple, so even if you customize it and add all kind of extras the tag # will allow you to access everything you need very easily.
I've had about 5 Dell computers and they're amazing and the feature i just described is super helpful if you ever run into any kind of problems.
Hope this information helped.

I LOVE my Dell BUT make sure you buy the extended warranty. They have the most excellent warranty service should anything go wrong. They come out to the house within a day or two and have it up and running in no time.
Their website is awesome. You type in your tag number from the bottom of the computer and everything you need to know about your computer plus the correct downloadable drivers are right there at your fingertips. It's awesome!

From personal and indirect experience: Apple.
The hardware and software are both more reliable than other makes. Fewer crashes, fewer component failures, and longer usable life.
Customer support is good. I've been in with a broken machines (HD, motherboard) and come out with the problem fixed (replaced HD, replaced laptop with my HD in it). With my windows machines there has been a two week turnaround.
And...
When you pay the apparently higher price up-front for an Apple it should be considered an investment - less time wrestling with Windows problems or suspect hardware later.

While nothing is perfect, Apple users tend to be happier about their computers.

Try the Fujitsu Lifebook A1220. It's built like a truck and they were offering a free three year extended warranty till Jan. 10.My husband and I just bought them and I've been using mine for three weeks and I love it. I have previously had Hitachi, Dell and Mac Power Book laptops, but this is in many ways my favourite. I love Macs but would have had to compromise too much on features to be able to afford one. We had occasion to call Fujitsu in the middle of the night when my husband forgot the password he'd just set, and they were very helpful, talked us through the problem. Their warranty isn't door to door service, but it is good at any Fujitsu authorized dealer anywhere in the world. Dell charges extra to get a warranty in another country, so if you travel abroad another plus.PCNet called it a clunker in appearance -- to us it just looks solid and substantial. When we got ours it was available with a blu ray rw drive for very little extra (and a better processor than came on the version without one), so we bought that, but this seems to have disappeared from Fujitsu's US web site, though it's still on the Canadian one (we live in Canada). Even without blu ray you wouldn't go wrong with this compute - its basic specs are very similar to the Dell Studio 15.

HP or Dell because you can go to their sites and customize. Both have good prices and are top selling brands.
