What is the reason behind the student/youth suicide in the world?

Student or youth suicide has now become a big problem for the world. According to a survey, Suicide numbers and rates per 100,000 young persons aged 15-19 in 90 countries (areas), according to the WHO Mortality Database, February 2004:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC141475...

This is not the latest survey result but certainly this problem has increased by that time.

In America more than half of American college students have considered suicide at some points in their lives according to a survey:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26272639/

where 1 in 5 grads is constantly stressed and this problem is not only limited to America, its a big problem worldwide.

So, my question is that what exactly is the reason behind the students' suicides in the world according to you and what exact measures should be taken to stop or at least reduce this problem considerably. This is of-course a big issue in the world because its not only that the innocent lives are lost because of this, it also because the world is losing young talent.

* OK! i have kept this question in the P&S category because i know here i can find people of all the age groups: the teenagers, the adults and even those who have completed their studies. So, please answer to this serious question.

Update:

@ Write: Only my username is a Tanha dil, not me. At 22 also i never try 2 go behind gals and other stuffs coz i hav a matured mind, i always had it and m proud of not being involved in those time wasting activities. So, don't point on any1 ok!

Update 2:

So, write: if u r younger than me then i would suggest u to shut up coz i have known this world better than u and if u r older than me, no offense but i don't think u have learned anything out of ur life experience. BTW i m pretty sure that ma life is much much happier than u.

Update 3:

@ Write: And BTW i don't need any such suggestions frm 15 yr old kiddies lik you who knows tomorrow u forget abt all these reasons u hav given and u also go 4 it. LMAO! never expected kids to teach their elders.

A good question about a pressing issue.

Many factors weigh into the rise in depression and suicide all over the world. These reasons interlink with one another to compound into a truly dangerous situation.

I'll start with the main factors first-

    1. Technology

This is a factor often overlooked, but a huge piece of the puzzle. As opposed to the enlightened, connected world that many believed the internet (being a major step in the path to communication, beginning with speech-->writing--->printing press-->internet) would bring, it has mostly created a generation of individuals who only seek people like them. Far from making them more comfortable, it actually lessens their ability to cope with insults and other things that we consider annoyances.

    2. Over Medication

As with Technology, Medication is has the proclivity to create an addiction and lessen our tolerance to everyday occurrences in life. It should be no surprise that contrary to helping prevent suicide, the rate of suicide has actually increased proportionately to the increase in use of anti-depressants. Most who take anti-depressants only make their problem worse by avoiding it all together. If they really struck down deep to the roots of what causes their depression in the first place instead of just ignoring and suppressing it, they would be far better off.

    3. Media Perception

As many are probably sure to point out, the Media helps cause suicide and depression by putting on an illusion of what a "perfect" teenager looks and acts like. The image is unattainable even as teens (and adults) try so hard to reach it. The result is the constant feeling that they are ugly, not good enough and worthless. Many tragically, unable to cope with these feelings (owing to isolation, over medication and peer pressure) make the tragic decision to simply end it all.

    4. Socio-Economic Refocusing

This has it's roots in the Industrial Revolution. The focus at this time shifted away from the craftsmen to the minimally skilled workers who filled the plants. The greatly diminished sense of worth (it feels much better to have made an entire piece of furniture than to have simply made the wheels for it) made many feel like failures from the get go. While factory work may seem like it only affects the adults in factories, it has a trickle down effect as this sense of worthlessness manifests itself either with-

    A. A direct transference to the children by the parents of the belief that like them, the children too are cogs in the wheel and shouldn't bother with trying for anything else.

    B. An intensified pressure on the children to NOT be that, resulting in the greatest form of peer pressure-familial expectations.

    5. Education Policy

This has two major systems it falls into. An industrial society will release students into the world with a minimal education-simply enough to fill one of many slightly skilled jobs. A pre or even post industrial society will focus on actual learning and pride-which can actually backfire when expectations become far to great for the student to keep up with.

    6. Rebuilding a culture/society/country

This may seem like an odd cause, but considering that in times of plenty the pace of effort is relaxed, in times of post war or post conquest, the pace is much more rapid. Unlike a society simply entering the Industrial phase, this society has just come out of a war or national tragedy that left it in ruins. The humiliation of having to pick up the pieces is devastating and made even worse if the country is still occupied.

Japans rate has slowed down, but not before it saw rapid rises in suicide rates. The two major peaks were during the Meiji Restoration (Japan hurled itself headlong into it's Industrial age following the humiliation of foreign powers) and post WW2 (Japan hurled itself this time into a post-industrial society after the humiliating occupation)

    Individual issues-

Lets see how this fits into place-

    Sri Lanka-

In a lengthy Civil war that ended in 2009. The results of the study you provided a link for in regards to Sri Lanka were taken in 1986, in the early intense stages of the war, where suicide is common in such a situation.

Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Estonia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan-

All suffered from losing their national identity for years under Soviet rule. Now free from this they are trying to find themselves again and regain their pride. The pressure is especially hard. All suffered from losing their national identity for years under Soviet rule. Now free from this they are trying to find themselves again and regain their pride. The pressure is especially hard on the students to accomplish this.

    Russian Federation-

Formerly the U.S.S.R., the Russian Federation shed much of it's former satellite states and suffered a humiliating setback in the Cold War. It is no surprise that suicide rates are so high in this country.

    Ireland-

Still underway is an insurgency to British rule, Irish like Sri Lankans have an ever growing fear of insecurity and betrayal.

    Japan-

It is not just a stereotype that Japanese students are heavily pressured. The old traditions are intermixed with modern realities and the Japanese find themselves torn between new and old. In Feudal times the Samurai (whom Japanese often seek to emulate, much like the Knights of Europe) would commit Seppuku (vulgarly often called Hara-Kiri) as retribution for a transgression against Bushido (akin to Chivalry in the West). This idea persisted into modern times, except Bushido necessarily had to transfer into a non-combat realm-education and finance. As a result of going from a military industrial society to a commercial economic society, the Japanese placed a large amount of stress on students as opposed to the warriors (who no longer existed). The result of which saw the battlefield of armies transfer into schools, and like the samurai of old, death was seen as the only repayment for failure in this new battlefield. It is a tragic byproduct of Japans "economic miracle" after WW2.

I will add more as I get time, great question!

Well I would say there are many reasons.

One of the main reasons for Western nations are they have their kids into a relationship at a VERY early stage, in teenage. When a child doesn't even know what is sex and abuse, he/she is into a relationship. And usually such relations don't last long and the child experiencing this gets a momentary feeling that life is over, he/she has lost everything. As your username says, "Ek tanha Dil," they feel lonely, bad, resulting in suicides.

Another reason is not getting what they want. If they don't get something, didn't win a talent show etc etc, they often suicide.

In Eastern nations, I would say teenagers are usually not into all this bf/gf crap. The reason for suicides here would be the freaking "Education system." They actually squeeze life out of the students, then pressure from parents, teachers. Academically good student get a job. Either they do well in college, or they suicide.
