Nitrogen water testing?!?

For my science project i am doing nitrogen levels in water. When i tested the water i used a chemical and a poisonous powder. Does anyone know what this chemical and powder might be? the powder was slightly grayish purple and the chemical was clear.

Nitrogen level? N2? Maybe if you mean nitrite or nitrate then this might be done by:

Sulfanilic acid and N-(1-Naphthyl)-ethylendiamine hydrochloride called Saltzmann reagent

To determine the nitrate level one reduces the nitrate by e.g. Zn/HCl before of the test

NItrogen is too inreactive to have a simple chemical reaction in water.
