3. define the term collateral blood flow, and describe how this and other factors affect the developement of stroke.

6. what is the functional relationship between Broca's area and Wernicke's area?

7 define the terms ipsilateral and contralateral as they apply to the functionality of the central nervous system.

8. explain the significance of the findings of brisk deep tendon reflexes and Babinski sign on the affected side of Sam's body.

Brodman mapped the brain based on the types of cells he saw. There are different functions associated with the different areas. If you have a stroke in a particular area you tend to use that function (in most cases in the opposite side of the body). Google "Brodman areas" to see the specific functions

    3. Collateral blood flow means that blood can get to an area of the brain through more than one artery.

    6. Broca's and Wernicke's are language areas. Basically language is understood in Wernicke's and produced in Broca's. They are connected by the arcuate fasciculus.

    7. Ipsi = same side of body. Contra = opposite. Example: If you have a stroke in Brodman's area 4 you will be weak on the contralateral side of your body.

    8. The central nervous system deficit (stroke I assume) results in loss of inhibitory modulation of the reflex. Hence, they are increased.

    10. Plasticity - essentially other areas of the brain take over for the lost areas by alteration of their function and sprouting of new neural connections.

I have never had this problem yet. I get hate mail for all sorts of random things. It does seem that people are more likely to hit the violation notice than bang out a poorly-spelled hate email these days.
