Moire pattern in digital photos?
I guess that's what it's called... This Ebay listing shows an example of the effect.

My question is what the heck causes it? It's particularly noticeable in some of the smaller photos but when you view them at higher resolution it vanishes- the clothes look normal. Is it something related to the digital camera sensor, the video card, computer monitor or what??

It's the way the browser resizes the photo. This is not caused by hardware. Browsers aren't very good at resizing photos, it's not their job.
If the photo was resized properly it would not do this.
