fitst choice AAC which is Mpeg4 Audio, M4A which has higher quality sound for same file size than MP3. second choice would be MP3. also use the highest quality you can 256 kbps or itunes plus format as you cant add quality once its imported but you can export it later to a lower quality file if you like.

these are open and common standards and the music should be able to be used on most players.

Apple lossless is very good but only if you never want anything other than apple to play it as its only compatible with apple systems and products.

The best is Apple Lossless like everyone says, but that typically runs about 30MB a song and 300MB a CD, which is HUGE.

ACC sounds pretty good and is pretty universal, MP3 is used in EVERYTHING so you are sure to have no problems with MP3, but with either ACC or MP3 you should at least go with 256KBs which will give you great sound and with a lot smaller size then Apple Lossless.

If i was you i would go to your iTunes Settings (preferences) and set your ripping and importing at a ACC Variable Bit Rate (VBR) with it set to almost highest quality. This will give you almost the best sound you can get from your iPod.

Also invest in some good headphones ($45+) such as Sony.

The best format is lossless. Apple lossless if your device supports it.

MP3 is garbage: the more compressed, the more garbagy. If you have to go with MP3, then the highest bitrate is the best (256k or better).

This is for the best quality. Lower bitrates let you put more songs on, but at lower quality. If you use crappy headphones, it won't matter much.

Well, I'd say if you want to have quality but at a compressed rate, try MP3s at 192kbps (there should be a drop-down menu or something that lets you change the "bit rate" of the songs for ripping). I personally max it out at 320 kbps but that, of course, is just me :)

I think iTunes is the free program that best suits your need. You can use and download music and videos with it. Get one of the latest version here: http://bit.ly/1pjUEKM

MP3 is the format you need for songs for your ipod. It is also the most common off websites you download them off.
