In Spanish when talking about a female cat, would you use el gato or la gata?
I know this is probably a really stupid question...but I totally forgot and I'm trying to write this Spansih essay. thanks.

You would use "La gata"
"El gato" is used to talk in general terms about the animal, or to say that it's male.
But if you're writing an essay, I would use more "el gato" because it's more generalized so it sounds better, but if you need to specify that it is a female cat, you can use gata, or "gato hembra" (female cat)

Typically, el gato is kept, regardless of the cat's sex. Sometimes, la gata is used. Even rarer: la gato.

La gata....if it is a mixed group with at least one male cat then los gatos..and male is el gato

El gato is correct term or los gatos if is more for the fact that gata is not used as much and is more common gato.

el gato, the "el" would change before you would have to change the gato part... im in italian but its the same principal lol
