In a dark room, light from outside the room can not penetrate the walls and doors, but sound is able to penetrate these materials and thus you can hear sounds from outside the room. We can make sound-proof rooms, too, of course.

sound is a physical wave while light is 'not'. sounds travel by moving particles and therefore can penetrate walls. while light is turned back by these same walls
