Why are Wine Gums called Wine Gums when they don't contain wine?

And why is there one marked Gin when Gin is a spirit NOT a wine?!

    The name comes from the lingering, subtle fruit flavours that make it "similar to the experience of savouring a fine wine". In reference to this, the sweets have the names of alcoholic drinks on them, for example port, sherry, champagne, claret, gin, Rioja, Chablis and Burgundy.

    They are so-called because of the lingering, subtle fruit flavours that make it "similar to the experience of savouring a fine wine". They do not contain any wine, but in a notorious case about 10 years ago a woman in the US claimed that her child became drunk after eating a pack of wine gums. She ended up serving 9 years for grand larceny after a series of other fraudulent claims (e.g. severed finger in her chilli at Wendy's!!)

    Charles Riley Maynard started his business in 1880 by producing sweets in a candy kitchen with his brother Tom, while his wife, Sarah Ann, served their customers. Maynards was launched as a company in 1896, having expanded his wholesale and retail business.

    Maynards wine gums were introduced in 1909 by Charles Gordon Maynard. When he first approached Charles Riley Maynard, a strict teetotal Methodist, with the sweets, he was nearly sacked on the spot!! However, Charles Gordon preserved and convinced Charles Riley there was no wine in the gums and Maynards wine gums have been with us ever since.

    The ingredients of these sweets include the following;

    Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Modified Starch, vegetable oil and flavourings.

    They also contain the following E Numbers:

    E129, E122, E104, E142.

    One of the most healthy foods are fruits and vegetables. There is not any healthy diet without them!
