Can carpal tunnel be just in your fingertips?
Not too long ago, I had 3 fingernails (forefinger, middle finger, & ring finger) that I somehow tore or clipped into the quick to keep the jagged edge from catching on my clothes, etc. and tearing off even more. The ring finger was first, and the nail pad (on top of your finger) looked like it was flaking off into layers, so I more or less chipped away at it until the nail end tore off. I can still see the dent the flaking left, in fact. My doctor thought the flaking could be a type of infection, but didn't say WHAT type.My middle finger started doing the same thing shortly afterwards. I kept band-aids on them, as my doctor suggested, until they started to grow out again normally, and now all three fingers are numb from the tips up to the first knuckle. I have very little feeling there at all. In fact, I can't even operate the nail clippers to trim those on my right hand. It's not really painful, it's just awkward--especially when I try to type. Any clues why this is going on, or if it is carpal tunnel syndrome??

No it can be in other places too as I found out last summer. I had the very same condition in my Foot of all things and the doctor said it was the very same condition as carpal tunnel--just called something similar but the exact same thing.
It sounds to me as if the nerves in your fingertips are damaged and that's why the lack of feeling.
I would suggest a professional cut your nails from now on; not one of those at the salon though--a real professional.

You don't say what caused the nails to snag or be broken in the first place. Have you had them pinched by something. To close to the door when you closed it. Even the desk or kitchen drawer. I have had numb fingers since 1992 when I broke my shoulder. Then it caused a vertebrae in my neck to degenerate in turn pinched a nerve in my neck and arm. Then about 6 weeks later I had a vertebrae in my lower back go so now If I am under stress I have numbness in one side of my but or the other clear down both legs. I have had little feeling in my feet since this happened. But yet I know my feet hurt when I stand to long. If there is nothing wrong with the finger as a injury to them alone. I would have the doctor check your neck or for Nerve Damage. Yes this can be very annoying I used to do alot of crafting and I hot glued my fingers one time and ended up with a very bad burn.

Carpal tunnel is in the wrists and not usually in the fingers by themselves. You seem to be having trouble with the tendons in your fingers more than anything. When they shorten up they pull the knuckles together on the finger making it hard to move it. Here is how you can release those fingers:
With fingers semi-bent take your other thumb and place at the base of one of the fingers, right above where it connects to the hand and press in and hold that pressure there. Wait 30 seconds and then slowly open your finger up all the way, release the pressure but hold your finger there for another 30 seconds. Move up to the base of the next joint and repeat and the top one if necessary. Then move on to the next finger, repeat until done.
