I have lived in Iowa all my life; have brown hair and hazel eyes; and am partially disabled due to arthritis in my back and feet. I live with my Mom who is also disabled. I'm "Mom" to a 17 year-old, dark gray --with white feet-- Maine coon cat named Boots (hence his name) who I saved from being put to sleep for the "crime" of being the runt of the litter, and his mother's owner couldn't find a home for him. I'm a college graduate with interests in geography, writing, history , reading, movies, music, soap operas, Aussie Rules football, soccer, rugby, and playing mahjong solitaire games online--among others. I discovered the wonders of Facebook in October 2009, and let's just say I'm addicted to it now. =)

  • Can male members of the Marine Corps have genital piercings since they don't show?

I am writing a book involving a US Marine who served in Iraq, and during one drunk night on leave at home before his second deployment overseas in 2005, he got a genital piercing. Do the Marines allow this sort of thing since it does not show when in uniform? How about a "crossed crown of thorns" tattoo on one bicep gotten before his first enlistment in 2002??

  • Is adult film actor Nick Manning of Native American descent?

His biographies all state "Caucasian" as his race, but he looks Native American. I am just curious. =)

  • How long does it take to be "mustered out" or discharged from the USMC?

I am writing a story involving a Marine who'd served 3 tours in the current war with Iraq, and was wounded severely enough that he can get a MEDICAL DISCHARGE. How long does the "mustering out" or discharge process take? My character had served 5 years total. I have found all kinds of information but this. Any help, especially from Marines, would be great.

  • How are semi-disabled people gotten onto airplanes?

I know it sounds silly, but I have always been curious about this. For instance, in my case, I have to use a walker and cannot climb steps. If air transportation is needed, how would I get on the plane? Do they have handicapped-accessible ramps, for instance?? Or, in the case of emergency exit, what if the person could not slide down the chute they always show in the movies, or get back on their feet once on the ground?

  • Why does my computer suddenly jump to web pages I could care less about?

For instance, just now I was sending a reply to an online vet, telling her about my cat's test results from bloodwork, etc. done by my local vet. Suddenly this page about CONSULT A LAWYER pops up in another window, with Gamevance.com's (which my Norton 360 Internet Security program says is a safe site) blue tab in the lower left corner of the page I started on. Or I get Microsoft ads, Google ads, or websites I have no clue what they're for. The other day some were for adult/porn sites! It even does it when I'm trying to answer a YA question, making me lose what information I've suggested and having to start from scratch again.

I can simply have my mouse cursor pointed at the bottom arrow of the scroll bar, and an ad will pop up listing all these stupid sites I don't want to know about. Any suggestions??

I've done virus scans, downloaded yet another antivirus program for a trial period (it is called AVAST and it often runs scans off and on all day while I am online, and has found numerous infected "malware/spyware cookies" that it has taken care of), and I am getting to the point of restoring my computer to factory status--if I wouldn't lose my achievements on Facebook or my downloaded games.

  • Why does my cat suddenly insist on waking me up at 5 a.m.?

I have a 17 year-old, neutered Maine coon tomcat who, just within the last month, has decided everyone in the house should get up at 5 a.m. He starts out with short meows, then progresses to longer ones that sound like he's saying "no" when I tell him to quit, or that sound like he's rolling the "R" sound. Once he has me awake, he goes immediately to the kitchen where 95% of the time, he still has the plateful of food that I'd given him before I went to bed. His litter box is kept cleaned to the best of my ability (I'm 62 ,partially disabled, and have to use a walker so it is sometimes hard for me to stand without it); his double-bowl is kept full of water. He thinks he can't eat anything unless it has a piece of turkey lunchmeat on top of it--and most of the time that is all he'll eat of the food. I give him a variety of flavors and brands because he'll get tired of one after awhile. He's never been outdoors because the street I live on is heavily traveled and I don't want him run over, so every once in awhile I will go out to get him some grass to eat (which he loves).

He didn't even realize he had a voice until he was 10 or 12 years old. Until then, he'd open his mouth and meow, but all that would come out would be a tiny squeak. Now, he's making up for lost time and his "motor mouth" is driving me nuts--especially in the pre-dawn hours when I am trying to sleep. His vet can find nothing wrong with him. I'm at the end of my rope and could use some suggestions. I hate yelling at him and I often end up in tears because he's driven me to do so. Once he has everyone awake, he'll go back to sleep.

  • Can someone suddenly become allergic to a computer?

It sounds silly, I know, but for the last few days, every time I sit down at my computer, my eyes will water till they hurt and my nose either becomes congested/stuffy or just the opposite. I've dusted the monitor off with a dry made-for-computers wipe, but my eyes hurt so bad I can hardly see what I'm doing. This has been going on for less than a month now..

What really seems to bother me is the ultra-bright white webpages of different sites. I have to shade my eyes from the glare.

  • Can carpal tunnel be just in your fingertips?

Not too long ago, I had 3 fingernails (forefinger, middle finger, & ring finger) that I somehow tore or clipped into the quick to keep the jagged edge from catching on my clothes, etc. and tearing off even more. The ring finger was first, and the nail pad (on top of your finger) looked like it was flaking off into layers, so I more or less chipped away at it until the nail end tore off. I can still see the dent the flaking left, in fact. My doctor thought the flaking could be a type of infection, but didn't say WHAT type.My middle finger started doing the same thing shortly afterwards. I kept band-aids on them, as my doctor suggested, until they started to grow out again normally, and now all three fingers are numb from the tips up to the first knuckle. I have very little feeling there at all. In fact, I can't even operate the nail clippers to trim those on my right hand. It's not really painful, it's just awkward--especially when I try to type. Any clues why this is going on, or if it is carpal tunnel syndrome??

  • Outlook Express question?

Just this week, Outlook Express won't let me open my Hotmail. It has decided the user name and password I have used since the first day I got my computer over 9 years ago (when I set up my Hotmail account) is no longer valid or configured right.

So, I just did the usual routine of setting up an email account, and got this error message for the umpteenth time today:

" The host 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/pop3mail.asp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/pop3mail.asp'... Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D"

The pop3 incoming mail had been set at http, and this part of the url originally read "httpmail.asp", but a search on Windows Live said it should be POP3 for incoming mail and SMTP for outgoing (no url for this was shown).

I use OE because it gives a wider email viewing area than my Hotmail page. Any suggestions???? This just started on Monday, August 31. It was perfectly fine last week and I had no problems at all accessing my email on OE.

  • My computer acts like it's possessed. HELP?

For the past few days, I can have my mouse cursor pointed ONLY on the bottom arrow on the side scroll bar, and web pages suddenly pop up out of nowhere. No url was put in the address area or anything. They have been pages for search engines, cell phones, pornography, etc. Half of them I have never heard of. What really irritates me is I'll be working on one page--like Yahoo Answers, or Facebook--and these pages come on and totally interfere with what I am doing. Last night a reply to a genealogy question on YA that I'd been working on for over 2 hours was totally lost because of these "pop-up pages."

It's bad enough having the pop-up ads, now I'm getting pop-up websites.WHY is this happening??? My Norton 360 antivirus and Symantec did a scan not too long before this started--the type where the technician takes control of your computer. Could that be the cause?

  • How does a Morton's Neuroma act?

I need some SERIOUS ONLY answers, & preferably from a doctor. For about 2 years now I have had a terrible pain in the tops of my feet, and the trouble is that it differs from day to day. One day it is a tingling sensation, the next a burning, then there is nerve-twitching, and finally cramping to the point it will literally raise my leg off the bed at night. It also seems to go diagonally from the outside of my foot to the inside. When I go to a podiatrist to have my toenails cut (a former fungus makes them too thick to cut myself), I literally CRINGE and grab the arms of the chair when he cuts the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nails. I have tried cortisone shots, but they last only 3 days maximum, if it works at all. He told me it could possibly be a Morton's Neuroma, and the picture I saw on the internet shows it going diagonally and between the 2nd and 4th toes.

I DO have degenerative arthritis in the soles of my feet, but the pain I have is only on the tops. If I go to an orthopedist, all they see is my weight. I am practically living on Excedrin for the pain (sometimes average 6 a day taken every 4-6 hours). I am to the point I want to amputate my feet. PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE!!

  • Brad, the techknow from Dell--are you out there?

My supposedly "high" speed internet is anything but that. And lately, my mouse cursor wants to get stuck in the same spot sometimes for up to 5 minutes, or it will simply disappear from the page (shows up in the bottom task bar, but nowhere else) especially when I am trying to play a game. My mouse is a Targus Laser ball-type. Should I get a new one??

Tonight I had to send about 15 error messages to Microsoft because none of the webpages I went to would respond and /or wouldn't close when I did the Ctrl-Alt-Delete routine. I also have to stop and wait till the computer catches up with my typing (I first get the cursor arrow with hourglass, and then the hourglass, like it is wanting to go to a new page).

I recently bought a new Registry Cleaner that took out thousands of temporary internet files; I have Stop Sign that does a daily check for viruses/infected files PLUS the Norton 360 anti-virus program. My computer is a Dell Dimension 2350 , and it is maybe 4 years old at most. HELP!!!!!! This is driving me nuts!!

  • HELP!! Why can't I copy/paste normally?

About an hour ago, I had some programs that wouldn't respond, so I did the Ctrl-Alt-Delete routine, sending about 6 error reports before they would close down, and now when I try to right click to copy/paste something, I get TWO square outlines, and have to run my cursor arrow up and down the list to find the ones I want. It looks like my Start Menu!! For instance, when over just a white area (like below where it mentions the community guidelines), I'd get options like Back,Forward; IM this page to a friend; Email this page to friend; Save Background As; Select All; Create Shortcut; View Source; etc.

In the area where I'm typing and/or would want to copy/paste, I get the options Select All; Delete; Paste; Copy; Cut; and Undo.

Would it help to do a System Restore?? This about the programs not responding just started a month or so ago and now I can set my watch by it (ALWAYS 9-12 midnight), but the copy/paste messup just started tonight.

  • How do I uninstall/remove the music program Kazaa?

I have tried a dozen times over the last 3 years to uninstall and remove the program Kazaa, which I have NEVER used because I could never figure it out. I go to the Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel, click to remove it, and am told it was "successfully removed" but 10 minutes later it is STILL in my Programs list. Their website won't accept email or phone calls because their "tech support team is so small they can't handle a lot of questions." Sharman Networks, its producer, says the same thing. I've been told it is a type of spyware program even though their website says otherwise. I don't need it to download music because I have Sonic and Music Match, too, and don't download that much music to begin with. HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • HELP!!!!!!!!!!! How do I save pictures in jpg format??

For some reason, my computer won't save anything but bitmap images--which I cannot use when making mahjong tilesets--all of a sudden.I've made probably 100 sets in the past, but now it's like my brain (or the computer's) can't remember how I did it. :( I right click to Save As, give the picture a name, but can't change where it says Bitmap, and then go through opening My Computer, disk C, Program Files, the program I want, and then player tilesets (which worked fine up till last night). Then I was able to preview the picture, crop it/edit it if necessary

and then add it to my Mahjong game's tilesets folder. I managed to save 6 pictures, but I need 36 for the set in order to submit it to the game. I've even tried to save them to My Pictures and then moving them to the tileset folder, but even that is not working (I can't preview them, etc).

  • Why--for the second night in a row--can't I send a genealogy answer without ERROR 999 showing up?

I can submit answers to any other area but this one. Last night I could answer Homework Help, Trivia, etc. questions with no problems, but could not submit genealogy answers. I even ran a virus scan to be sure that wasn't the cause, but no viruses were found (just some stupid adware program for HotBar, which I uninstalled 2 years ago!!).

  • About fonts again?

I'd like to know how--once you've downloaded a new set (or more than one) of fonts, how do you access them for programs like Picture It Publishing, or emails, etc?? I'd like to find one with all these special characters like the umlaut, tilde, etc, that all these older names from France, Spain, Germany, etc. use when doing surname or genealogy research. I've tried downloading some sets before but can never access them to use them.

  • Why can't I open 2 windows tonight??

Up until tonight I could open 2 windows (open 1 window, minimize it, and then open the second) set to www.Yahoo.com. I'd use 1 to open up the YA questions and the other to research my answer and then copy/paste any info I found back to window 1. Tonight when I tried to do this, I couldn't move back and forth between them without closing all of them. I could write down my answer and then type it all, but in genealogy questions--or ANY question, for that matter--it would take forever. Suggestions??
