How long does it take to be "mustered out" or discharged from the USMC?

I am writing a story involving a Marine who'd served 3 tours in the current war with Iraq, and was wounded severely enough that he can get a MEDICAL DISCHARGE. How long does the "mustering out" or discharge process take? My character had served 5 years total. I have found all kinds of information but this. Any help, especially from Marines, would be great.

This question has a couple different answers.

If you are just talking about how long a medical discharge takes, i have seen it take anywhere from 2 months to 2 years. Right now, 1 year is pretty common. Medical retirements can take longer.

Now, if you are talking about just a plain Honorable discharge, then it can take anywhere from 1 month to 5 days depending on how efficent you are at the checking out process.

In the end, it doesn't really matter at all how many tours in GWOT you did or how many years you've done in service.

    Hope this helps.
