Is there a relationship between impacted anal glands in dogs and pooping in the house?

My 12 year old dachshund has been having accidents in the house during the last two weeks where he poops when he's home alone for more than a couple of hours. He normally is quite nicely housebroken. He HATES the winter and is often stubborn about going potty when there's lots of snow outside, so we figured he was just being a brat. However, we went to the vet today and it turned out he needed his anal glands expressed BIG TIME. I forgot to ask the vet if that had anything to do with the recent potty issues. Aside from the incontinence that naturally occurs with age, does anyone know if these potty issues have to do with the anal glands?

Absolutely. The dog feels sensation in his glands, and thinks that if he poops it will solve the problem. The sensation also stimulates the bowel. Emptying glands is not a big deal. Read up on it ( Google) and do it yourself every couple weeks.

PS At 12 though it is more likely to be incontinence.

Maybe since he's not going outside, he's getting less exercise. My vet said it's common for indoor dogs to get impacted anal glands because lack of exercise. If you ask your vet, he/she will show you how to express your dog's anal glands and then you can do it yourself regularly because it can be really uncomfortable and painful for your dog if they get too packed.
