!!!!! What are photoshop masks?

and what are they used for?

    Layer Masks are Applied to layers and serve to either hide or reveal specific parts of those layers. Think of them in much the same way you would think of a stencil. Except that with Photoshop masks you can also achieve variable opacities. You're not limited to just hidden or visible you can have something 50% hidden or 20% visible etc.
