Do you believe Gray Maynard deserves a title shot?
He is unbeaten in his UFC career (7-0-1), but only beat Nate Diaz by a split decision. Moreover, 3 of his last 4 wins have been very lackluster. Can he really be competitive against BJ Penn?
Colton - Well Maynard fought Edgar already and beat him decisively, but nowhere near impressive.
UFCsoldier - Maynard fought Huerta this past September and we know how that went.

He can't beat Penn, if he fights like he did last night Penn will stand back and pick him apart. BJ's hands are as fast as Diaz's, but heavy enough that if Maynard allows him to land shots like he did last night, he'll be waking up with a doctor's pen light shining in his eyes. I thought Maynard had more heart than that, especially after his win over Jim Miller (Jim was my college roommate, I hated to see him lose). I think right now, Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian both could beat Maynard, especially if he's not going to take the fight to the ground.
He's a big time wrestler who's afraid to take elite grapplers to the mat. BJ is a great boxer, great grappler, and has a fantastic take down defense.
I wish I hadn't stayed up for last night's fight, it just showed that the UFC needs to go looking for some elite level talent in the 155 division.

Does he deserve the shot should not be the question. Will it be a challenge for BJ should be the question. I personally think that he does deserve but he needs to improve and one of the guys bellow me stated it pretty good. He barely beat Nate last night. I think he needs to fight Roger Huerta, Clay Guida or Diego Sanchez before even thinking about that title shot. I am not convinced yet. Just because he has been doing well in UFC. He used the safe way out last night by not getting in the exchanges with Nate. I also don't think he has a good enough chin to be fighting BJ. Diego got his chin rocked against BJ. Gray's chin would fall off his face against BJ.

No BJ Penn is going to destroy him. This is the main problem I see with the UFC not opening it's doors to co-promotion. The various divisions are becoming more and more one sided which is a good thing if you're a champ but as a fan who wants to see Penn vs. Maynard? of GSP vs Hardy? I think they are going to have a hard time finding decent competition for any of the champs except for Machida at 205 that division is still very very competitive as far as title contenders go. Well I guess heavyweight too given the current state of Lesnar. Just think of the possibilities if MMA organizations started coming together to offer super fights Fedor vs Mir! BJ Penn vs Shinya Aoki! It opens up so many more possibilities.

He deserves it, but Frankie Edgar deserves it just as much, if not more. I think that Frankie should fight Maynard, then the winner should get Penn. It's not like either of them are going to beat Penn...Penn is just too good the way he is training right now. I see him staying the champ for a long, long time.

If he wins against Huerta, that's the two going to be him or Frankie Edgar. Frankie additionally does not have an excellent call yet the two are on somewhat win streak. the only way one in each of them isn't next in line for a shot is that if the WEC is merged with the UFC. Zuffa owns the two manufacturers and Dana White has mentioned they have been discussions approximately merging the manufacturers. He additionally mentioned that the UFC will upload a BW and FW branch quite they merge or no longer. in the event that they merge, i could see them doing a UFC champ vs WEC champ (the two Jamie Varner or the winner of Cerrone/Henderson combat). that would provide gray and Frankie time to construct their names somewhat extra.

despite not being worthy of a title shot with bj he is truly the best contender for the title in the division that hasnt recently got a title shot. So i do agree that the ufc will give him a title shot although he is not deserving of what, but the truth is the division isnt that deep.

He has the best case argument wise to get a shot but no, he can't be competitive against BJ. I don't think he would beat Sanchez or Florian either.

His fight against Huresta was embarrassing. If THAT Maynard showed up against BJ we should be expecting a funeral.

The BJJ06 dude said it all but I think he has the best case for anyone else in the ufc
