It is very important to explain this to your daughter because if she doesn't know it can be quite scary. You're right, due to proteins being added to meats, girls are having their period younger and younger. The best way to explain this is to not get too technical or confusing. Explain what her "parts are" and what they do. This will then lead to the dropping of an egg and release of the uterine lining which causes blood. Teach her about tampons and pads and what their differences are. The most important thing is to explain that she is normal and not to be scared, it means that she is growing up and she should be excited. This is also a good time to give the sex talk if you haven't already done so.
Good luck!

Well, I haven't had any kids, but I recall how I was raised. I think I knew something about the menstrual cycle for as long as I can recall. My mother and I talked about pretty much everything. The best advice I can think of is to just be honest and not sugar coat things. Let her know that everyone's cycle can be different. Mine was crazy erratic until I got on Birth Control (for the periods), but otherwise they were more of an annoyance. My older sister on the other hand, would have cramps so bad she had to miss class.
I'm sure in the long run she'd rather be properly prepared, than surprised.
Hope this helps at least a little.
