What is the deal with all of these earthquakes? Could they be a sign of the beginning of the end?

No. They cannot.

These earthquakes are a natural consequence of Plate Tectonics.

Tectonic plates move, collide, overlap, and cause earthquakes.

It's been happening since the beginning of time.

A fault line runs right through Haiti. It's only natural that, should an earthquake occur in the region, it happen along a fault line, as all earthquakes do.

It's just a shame, since the country has been ravaged by political instability and hurricanes in the last few years, and was ill-prepared for such a violent natural disaster.

Religious documents don't say anything about the end of the world. They refer to it, in general, they never give a date. Also, religious documents were written by men. Men can't see into the future.

2012 is a year like any other.

End of the world prophecies have been around ... since the beginning of time, oddly enough.

There's no reason to pay any more attention to this one than any of the previous ones.

Our life spans are very short compared to geologic time. The planet was born violently 4.5 billion years ago and has been in constant change since. Recorded history is tiny by comparison so we get the idea these changes are only recent. Anything could happen at any time with little or no warning. The geologic record supports this.

The difference now is many people take advantage of this with books, movies and TV shows. They just happen to make some big money at the same time. Saying nothing will happen does not sell.

Scientists estimate that about 10,000 years ago there were 500 million people on the planet. By 1987 the pop. was about 4 billion. By 2050 the estimates are 10 billion. Many will live in areas of earthquakes, volcanoes, monsoons, tsunamis, drought and floods as their ancesters did. When a disaster happens the potential loss of human life will also increase dramatically. The only thing the developed nations can do is try to be prepared (Katrina shows we are not) and provide help to the rest of the world that is struck by a disaster.
