my car was totaled by the ins. co. Do I still have to make the payments?

My car was in a 1 car accident. The garage called and said it was totaled. Do I still make the car payments or is the insurance company supposed to take care of this?

You will need to get a hold of you insurance company and see what they say.

They will usually send out an adjuster to determine if it is totaled or not.

The insurance may not pay you what you owe on the vehicle, anything they don't pay you would have to pay off to the lender you owe money to.

That is the crummy part about insurance they could total it and not give you enough to pay off your loan.

When the insurance company totals your auto they will give you what the blue book value is & if the auto has a lien against it(a loan) the draft will be made out to the loan company & you, then once the balanced is satisfied with the company it's up to them to give you any remaining balance from the insurance company. Remember not to let your payments lapse at the bank & don't take the garage's word for it until you hear for the insurance company.

Until you settle with the insurance co. you are still responsible for the payments. You may still owe something after the settlement unless you have Replacementt Cost clause or you have bought Gap insurance.
