Am I going to lose my files on my laptop?
I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my Compaq laptop. Windows 7 Home Premium is going to be shipped to my house soon. I don't plan on buying a outer hard drive or something to save my files. So when I install it, will I lose all my downloaded programs and Word documents?

In a perfect world... no the upgrade will not lose your files but O.S. upgrades are tempermental and things can go wrong.
Always, always, always, backup your data when upgrading your O.S to a new build, let alone service packs. Im opposed to upgrading because if your going to do all that work, might as well start with a clean install.
Buy a usb flash drive. They are relatively cheap nowadays or borrow a friends.

Not if you install as an upgrade. But doing a "Clean Install" is always best.
If you have enough room on you're HD I suggest you shrink
the Vista Volume(from Disk Management)
Then boot from the Install Disc and install Windows 7 on the new partition
You will then have a Dual Boot machine.
