scientific evidence for certain "supernatural" phenomena?
is there any type of proof at all for ghosts or haunted houses? and i'm not asking for any type of religious answer whatsoever. i'm aware that the idea of ghosts and the occult stems from the imaginations of overtly religious ancestors, but has there ever been a scientific explanation for what might be going on? perhaps dealing with electromagnetics, or some other unseen and little-known phenomena that could produce "happenings" that would SEEM like the work of spirits? i find myself torn because i adhere quite firmly to science and proof, and yet i cannot deny that i have a profound interest in the occult. i've been looking around online for answers but didn't find anything useful yet. if anyone could help me out, that would be cool. thanks guys.
thank you all for your answers so far, they're very helpful. :-)

Michael Persinger has done some work on electro magnetic fields in relation to paranormal phenomena. He is perhaps most famous in the paranormal community for his "God Helmet" experiments (link below). There are of course many ideas about ghosts ranging from misperception to hallucinations to extra sensory perception. I have provided some links below.

In most situations, there IS scientific explanation. Drafty, old houses can scare a person into believing a lot of things, including things that aren't actually there. However, there are some things that have been recorded via scientific standards that cannot otherwise be explained by science.
For example: In one house, it was recorded that, among other things, a certain spot was 30 degrees Fahrenheit LOWER than the rest of the room. In most cases, a cold spot would usually be dismissed as a draft. Usually, a cold spot would disperse throughout the room, instead of occupying one location.
Is this evidence, though? For now, you choose - modern science still seems to be out on this vote.

I will answer this from a Paranormal Investigators perspective I have to say no to your question. The reason I say this is there has not been definitive proof in a controlled environment gathered to prove this . i will say that in alot of reported Paranormal sightings I have found high electromagnetic fields which in high levels can be unhealthy as it can cause hallucinations ,feeling's of uneasiness, skin rashes, Paranoia, But I will add that I find it hard to believe that the millions of reported encounters with the paranormal is mass hallucination. I firmly believe in the Paranormal I have experienced it first hand in personal event's in life and on Investigation's I want so bad for the scientific community to gather the proof they need to prove it's existence and I believe that Paranormal investigating is headed that way as more and more Investigating teams are using the scientific approach to the investigation's this is my approach. Most scientist's will agree that just because science has not proven it that it does not mean it does not exist it is just science cannot back it with proof to show scientifically that it does in fact exist but i think sometime in the near future it will be proven that there is something going on on another realm or in another world or space in time besides our own whether it be life after death or what ever but I will say that more and more men of science are indeed investigating these reports and searching for credible evidence to prove in it's existence but until that day this debate will go on and on

Read "Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife" by Mary Roach. It lists the names, credentials, and university postings of scientists who are doing research in these areas. It is also an entertaining read, as Mary injects a lot of humor into her writing.
Of course, when a phenomena is supported by actual scientific research then it, by definition, will no longer be paranormal.

On the reality paranormal shows it seems that ghosts go along with an excess of Electric magnetic fields EMF's
Also, with places that are built on quartz or other material that conducts or copies images or sounds......they often randomly replay.
Besides who on earth really knows the mysteries of the universe. Outside of our physical world there is many things that we can't begin to comprehend.
I believe that science is proving a higher power and visa versa.
Whether or not there are spirits etc is something we can't really know.
Very little on earth is absolute science. We think it might be absolute but who knows what happens outside of our small dimensions.

When I was studying at UVA (M.A. in English), I was surprised to learn that the university employed several psychologists/biologists who focused on the paranormal.
To be honest, I have not reviewed the articles that these individuals have published in peer-reviewed journals, so I cannot comment on the strength of this research.
I have included a link to UVA's Division of Perceptual Studies, which houses/sponsors these researchers.

No, there is absolutely no positive evidence of ghosts or haunted houses. Quite the contrary, as more and more sightings and experiences are being scientifically debunked on a daily basis.

Good question. No there isn't. There will naturally be some argument over this point since a lot of people don't really know what conditions must be met for evidence to be considered scientifically valid. It seems many ghost hunters just think that if you use scientific-looking equipment to record something (an "EVP", a magnetic field spike, etc.) and you can't think of a natural explanation (or if you refuse to), then that's scientific evidence for a ghost! You may laugh at that, but I've seen this expressed a lot.
As far as explanations for supposed paranormal things and events, there is no shortage of amateur ghost scientists offering vague scientific-sounding conjectures, using buzzwords such as "electromagnetic" and "quantum". But this does not constitute a scientific explanation either, which must be formed of a solid chain of causal links which can each be individually investigated and confirmed scientifically. Simply hand-waving about the mysteries of quantum physics doesn't quite cut it.
I am like you -- firmly grounded in science yet with an interest in the occult. I have only been disappointed, however, when looking for scientific evidence of any such things.
EDIT: Just to be clear regarding another answer, scientists are not in fact saying that "the electromagnetic fields and water and even lightening can attract entities to manifest themselves." I ask for a journal reference and credentials for those who would disagree.

If there was any verifiable proof out there, it would have made the news in a bigger way than the moon landing. That such an occurence has not happened is a pretty obvious indicator that the paranormal is either not real, or perpetrators of paranormal activity (when/if it's not "investigators" trying to make a quick buck by scamming suckers) don't want anyone to know about them.
Let me put it this way... there are several organizations offering sums of money in excess of 1 million USD for irrefutable proof of ANYTHING paranormal. Whether it's actual magic, ghosts, demons, etc, they have a lot of money set aside and waiting for someone that can prove the existence of something paranormal. Nobody has successfully claimed that money. Ever. And it's not because they have high moral standards. It's because if it their ghost haunting their home was disproved and shown to just be them using magnets beneath the floor, they'd lose a source of income from giving 'ghost tours' wouldn't they?

properly subjective evidence may be sensible for some issues. in spite of everything if we are measuring thoughts or psychological states, in many circumstances subjective reviews may be the only element, in spite of the actuality that increasingly extra with MRI, and different coaching its turning out to be extra appropriate. the concern with subjective reviews, is they are in a position to in many circumstances be incorrect and incorrect. we choose a trend of verifying them in substantial concerns. We already comprehend adequate concerning to the recommendations to renowned that our recommendations under stress can journey somewhat extraordinary issues that are no longer genuine or real. If case in point chatting with somebody with severe paranoia, people somewhat are not following them and secret agent's are not somewhat listening to them. people under the effect of drugs can see and hear issues no longer there, or maybe in severe hypoxia (loss of oxygen) can see and hear issues. I recommend somebody stricken by seen or auditory hallucinations are suffering because of the fact of recommendations states, those issues are genuine. With massive questions like gods, its a large declare, its a staggering declare, so subjective evidence cant qualify, because of the fact we are biased in subjective techniques. I recommend if I observed magical pixies seem in the previous me and initiate giving me revelations, ought to i bypass and pontificate and tell all people, or seek for scientific help?
